Saturn's Moons Saturn's Moons The dozens of icy moons orbiting Saturn vary drastically in shape, size, surface age and origin. Some of these worlds have hard, rough surfaces, while others are porous bodies coated in a fine blanket of icy particles. All have greater or smaller numbers of craters, and many have ridges and valleys. To date, 53 moons have been officially named. Astronomers continue to find new small moons orbiting Saturn, using both ground-based observatories and Cassini's own imaging cameras. For more information on the latest moons discovered visit the Recent Discoveries page and the Icy Satellites publications listing. Diversity of Worlds The moons of Saturn are a diverse collection. In some ways, the moons Titan and Enceladus have turned out to be the stars of the Cassini mission.
National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 - Alan Taylor - In Focus National Geographic is currently holding its annual photo contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30. For the past nine weeks, the society has been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well. National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose among its entries from 2011 for display here on In Focus. Gathered below are 45 images from the three categories of People, Places, and Nature, with captions written by the individual photographers. Reusable Art The Telescope - Team Hubble Goddard Space Flight Center is home to the Space Telescope Operations Control Center for Hubble. Gathering images from space is more than a "point and shoot" proposition. The Hubble Space Telescope explores our universe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Operating and maintaining such a tireless observatory and converting its raw data (digital signals) into images requires considerable effort from the people on the ground. Operating Hubble Hundreds of scientists, engineers, and technicians — at both NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) — bear the collective responsibility for operating the Hubble Space Telescope and for monitoring its health, safety, and performance. Hubble mission operations fall into two categories: Engineering operations, which test and maintain the Hubble spacecraft's overall performance. Hubble's Ground Control Flight Operations All of the Hubble Space Telescope's activities are controlled by people on the ground.
9 Very Common Figure Drawing Mistakes, And How to Avoid Them Over the last twenty-five years I have spent my fair share of time drawing and studying the human figure. As a result, I’ve come across several (actually, nine) common figure-drawing mistakes over and over again. Like any other art process, figure drawing is a fluid activity and impossible to pin down with exact rules—but if your goal is to create a more convincing life drawing, then these next few ideas will certainly help. Here are the nine common figure-drawing mistakes, along with their solutions: Mistake #1 – Drawing without a goal in sight More often than not, people immediately begin sketching without establishing some kind of intention in their mind first. Solution: Pause for a moment before beginning your drawing and to look at what you see in front of you. Mistake #2 – Failing to keep the figure on the page It’s always shame when heads, arms or feet get unintentionally cut out of a drawing, just because the artist has run out of room on the paper.
