Hero of Alexandria Hero of Alexandria (Greek: Ἥρων ὁ Ἀλεξανδρεύς, Heron ho Alexandreus; also known as Heron of Alexandria c. 10 – c. 70 AD) was a Greek mathematician and engineer who was active in his native city of Alexandria, Roman Egypt. He is considered the greatest experimenter of antiquity[1] and his work is representative of the Hellenistic scientific tradition.[2] Hero published a well recognized description of a steam-powered device called an aeolipile (sometimes called a "Hero engine"). Much of Hero's original writings and designs have been lost, but some of his works were preserved in Arabic manuscripts. Career[edit] It is almost certain that Hero taught at the Musaeum which included the famous Library of Alexandria, because most of his writings appear as lecture notes for courses in mathematics, mechanics, physics, and pneumatics. Inventions[edit] Mathematics[edit] In media[edit] Bibliography[edit] Works known to have been written by Hero: Works that are preserved only in fragments: GeodesiaGeoponica

Unix / Linux Fork Bomb Explained (Discalimer: if you run this command and something goes wrong with your computer's hardware, software or if you lose your work or data, please do not hold me responsible. You have been warned) In case you are a Windows user, we have an article about: Windows Fork Bombs! What is a Fork Bomb Unlike what its pronunciation might suggest, a fork bomb does not throw dining forks at you when it explodes. A fork bomb is something which calls the fork function indefinitely and rapidly, thus exhausting all system resources. How does a fork bomb work? In this case ‘:’ is the name of the bash function (and is interpreted by the shell itself). When a user runs the fork bomb, it defines a function named ‘:’. The definition of the function contains the root of bomb. To launch the bomb, all you need to do is to type (or copy-paste) those seemingly harmless letters in your Linux terminal and hit enter. How to protect against fork bombs

A Retrospective/Post-mortem on Dear Esther | Robert Briscoe - Environment Artist and Indie Game Developer So it’s been a long time since I’ve had a chance to update my blog. The last time I posted on here, the game was just mere months away from release and I was pretty damn petrified. Since then things have been a blur, so much has happened in the last 12 months that I’ve really not had time to reflect on it all, but now I have a bit more free time on my hands I’ve decided to step back and take a closer look at the game’s development, its humble beginnings and the amazing, scary and emotional ride that I’ve been on for the past 3 years. To start off with, I should probably go back to where things all began and how I ended up as a game artist in the first place so that you can get a better idea of how I ended up working on Dear Esther. Humble Beginnings I really began dabbling in game art back in 2004 when the Half-Life 2’s SDK came out. I started out by making a couple of maps that, although not particularly popular, proved to be an invaluable learning experience more than anything else.
/dev/blog: On the state of Windows on the desktop I have this Linux system on my PC which has become a bit boring (no, it's not crashed or anything... I just got a bit bored), so I decided to replace it with Windows 7 (some friends told me to not even try Windows 8 because it has an advanced interface nobody was able to figure out yet). I really did not set the bar too high: I just hoped to have a nice user-friendly interface and recover the email I have in Maildir, and maybe watch my video collection on an external hard drive. You know, the usual stuff I do on Linux every day. Please note that this article is a parody of what some Windows users write about Linux. I didn't want to commit and install a new operating system right off the bat. I can understand not having a free version (well, no I can't, but let me just pretend I do), but why on earth is there no live CD? I called a friend of my friend's I knew had some experience with Windows before. So I got an .iso file. Back in the installer, I formatted the two partitions as NTFS.
Scientists Uncover Invisible Motion in Video A 30-second video of a newborn baby shows the infant silently snoozing in its crib, his breathing barely perceptible. But when the video is run through an algorithm that can amplify both movement and color, the baby’s face blinks crimson with each tiny heartbeat. The amplification process is called Eulerian Video Magnification, and is the brainchild of a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The team originally developed the program to monitor neonatal babies without making physical contact. “Once we amplify these small motions, there’s like a whole new world you can look at,” he said. The system works by homing in on specific pixels in a video over the course of time. It is important to note that the crane does not actually move as much as the video seems to show. The team posted the code online and made it available to anyone who wanted to download it and run the program.
(263) Hacking into the Indian Education System - On the Stepping Stone - Quora In the last several weeks, in a time wedged awkwardly between the end of my college finals and my summer internship, I've been exposed to some information that left me quite flabbergasted. It started about a month ago. It was a very important day in the lives of two of my juniors and close friends, Sumit Shyamsukha and Ronak Shah. Wrought with the monumental anxiety that usually surrounds such a crucial result, Sumit had asked me whether I might be able to break into their system before D-day and quell his curiosity. Technicality Alert. [Technical] Handed just a URL and a task, I was unsure of how to proceed past a mostly blank screen with two text-boxes in the center. I tried again, a little while after the results were released. At least I could salvage some of my respect and maybe scrape some results, I thought. The page source did not contain the HTML for a particular student's results but had one layer of additional security - it fetched them via javascript. Enough is enough.
