The Good Guy Contract
Twenty years ago, the first woman I ever loved broke my heart. Like many break ups, the end came in stutters and sine waves rather than as an abrupt but mercifully irreversible amputation. However, for reasons I couldn't understand yet quickly began to resent, my ex-girlfriend continued to ask favors of me. And I continued to grant them. Then one morning while chanting I found myself ruminating about how inappropriate it was of her to keep asking, and the more I thought about it, the more irritated I became. At that exact moment, the phone rang. I knew it was her calling—and sure enough, after I'd finished showering, one of my roommates confirmed it and added that she'd asked that I call her back before I left for school. As I walked toward the phone I told myself that when she asked me for the favor for which I knew she'd called, I'd refuse. I hung up—and laughed out loud. So I decided to begin chanting with the determination to free myself from my inability to refuse her favors.
How to negotiate better than 99% of people
In college, I had the opportunity to teach a “Student-Initiated Course,” or basically a course on whatever I wanted. So I got together with two of my friends and we put together a course on religious studies. Now, Stanford gave us incredible flexibility to teach essentially whatever we wanted…but the student instructors never got letter grades — it was always Pass/No Pass (everybody always passed), issued by the sponsoring professor. Until we came along. You see, I was never the smartest person in any school I attended. We would basically write our own ticket! One of my co-instructors was amazed that I convinced the sponsoring professor to agree. But my other co-instructor hesitated. To give you some context, this guy was a PhD student in Computer Science at Stanford and had previously attended IIT, one of the most competitive technical universities in the world. “Dude,” I said, “what’s your problem? “No, Ramit,” he said, “I don’t know about this. “What the hell?” I just stared at him. 1. 2.
7 Keys to Reading Faster - StumbleUpon
Photo by Nathiya Prathnadi Want to read faster? In this article, I’m going to share the lessons I learned that doubled my reading rate, allowed me to consume over 70 books in a year and made me a smarter reader. I’m also going to destroy some speed-reading myths, to show you it isn’t magic but a skill anyone can learn. How I Started Speed Reading My first introduction to the concept of speed reading was from a book, Breakthrough Rapid Reading. More than just words per minute, speed reading helped instill a new passion for reading. Here are a few of the lessons I’ve learned from several years of speed reading: 1. Your eyes don’t actually stay fixed in one spot. Normally, when your eye twitches away, it must relocate in its previous position. The easiest pointer is just the tip of your finger. Note for Advanced Speed-Readers: You can further increase your speed-reading rates by keeping your pointer 1-2cm away from the margins of the text. 2. To me, these arguments miss the point. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Do Not Be This Girl | Sex, Life, and Hannah
OMG. Where do I even begin? Thank god my relationship is way more honest, thank god we never had a wedding, thank god my husband inspires me to follow my heart…thank god I still have a life. Thank god I am not this girl, even though I have had moments of being this girl, and I completely blame society, family, and media for this, because we are never taught to just enjoy relationships for what they are, which could be a hot two-month affair, or a baby-daddy arrangement, or twenty years of friendship. Bullshit. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with getting married, or that it’s all some bridal magazine delusion. We are biologically programmed to procreate.
