Innovation's Secret Sauce: Friendship
As a business owner, I’m always looking at how to structure relationships. I’ve joked that a sense of humor is our main concern when evaluating new clients at Karten Design. But when I really think about it, compatibility and the ability to have fun with your clients is a serious matter. Recently, the composer Michael Giacchino shared his creative process with our studio. When Giacchino works with his friends--movie writers, musicians, other composers, sound effect artists--they share ideas, offer cross-pollination between disciplines, and hone each other’s work through constructive criticism, all without fear of judgment or offense. This idea resonated with me. I can remember a time when we worked in reclusive ways. Design as a discipline is constantly evolving. [ Image: Flickr user jenny downing ]
A Geek's Guide to Budgeting Hobbies
A professor once told me his trick to happiness: treat your hobby like a career, but more important. Those of us who eat up all types of hobbies—from comics to video games to DIY projects—know that a good hobby can be one of the most enriching parts of life, but they can also require a lot of time and money. Here's how to better budget that time and money.P All work and no play isn't good for anyone. A good work-life balance hinges on getting in the time to do what's important to you. If you don't already, it's time to start treating your hobbies with the same respect you give your career (although a hobby can also help your career, in certain cases). Budget Your Hobby TimeP You probably have a hard enough time keeping up with your day to day, but finding time for hobbies is just as important as getting your errands done. Organize and Prioritize Your HobbiesP SExpand If you're anything like me, you have a bunch of different interests and hobbies. Budget Time Every Day, No ExcusesP
Get Mentally Fit with an Idea Quota
The first step to have great ideas is to adopt an attitude of having lots of ideas. Going further, there are some strategies we can use to dramatically increase the amount of ideas we generate. The Idea Quota is one of the simplest and most effective of them. The Idea Quota I first learned about the Idea Quota through Michael Michalko’s excellent book Thinkertoys. The point of committing to a quota is that it forces you to actively pursue new ideas. Although you can use quotas without specifying a central theme for your ideas, the technique works best when you direct it to very specific needs, such as: a challenge you’re working on, either in your personal life or at work;an improvement you want to make in your life or business;finding answers to specific questions you have, either practical or more abstract. Pump Some (Mental) Iron Just like in a physical workout, to grow your creativity muscles you have to constantly push your limits, even if just a little bit. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
