Facebook Flooded With Data Requests From European Governments During a European Parliament civil liberties committee hearing in Brussels on Monday, legislators convened to learn more about ongoing U.S. digital dragnet operations, but were instead treated to news of their own governments’ snooping habits. According to an article in the New York Times, Facebook representative Richard Allan told the assembled committee that the social media company had “received 8,500 requests from the European Union affecting 10,000 user accounts during the first six months of this year.” The requests from European governments equaled roughly half of the number of requests filed by U.S. officials. Michael Paul Smith's Imaginary Miniature Elgin Park World Meet Michael Paul Smith. For over 25 years, he has been creating an imaginary world called “Elgin Park,” filled with scaled models of old cars. They’re 1/24th the size to be exact. He chooses appropriate surroundings for these models, and then uses his camera to capture the most realistic shot possible. The kind of shot that you have no idea is within a tiny world. Here’s the best part: he does it all with a $200 point and shoot camera. Michael admires a couple of his creations. With the right perspective, this miniature town looks completely real. But this is what it actually is. Another shot that looks realistic. But it’s not either. As you can see, his fake world is completely convincing. A part of me wants to climb into the world he has created. This is my favorite one. Behind the scenes. Here are a few more “perception” shots from his miniature creation. This is proof that creativity always reigns above budget. Source / Michael’s Flickr Share Michael’s work with others.

Incorrect Phrases Some people mumble. Others repeat nonsensical sayings they just don't understand. Whatever the reason, we've totally bastardized parts of the English language, often changing the phrases' meanings, too. These 11 examples always come out incorrectly. 1. If you say "for all intensive purposes," you mean "for all these very thorough purposes," which doesn't make any sense. On the other hand, "for all intents and purposes" means "for all the reasons I did this and all the outcomes." 2. This phrase should imply you cut a new bud (off a plant), not bit someone in the backside. 3. "One in the same" refers to one thing in a group of other things that look the same — meaningless. 4. Even though you do something on purpose, you can't do something on accident. 5. "Case in point" means, "Here's an example of this point I'm trying to make." For the record, the plural is "cases in point." 6. Using "of" here is just wrong. 7. So what "thing" do I have coming? 8. 9. 10. 11. "Supposably" isn't even a word.

Splenda's Dirty Little Secret: It's Terrible for the Environment Every morning, I drink at least three cups of coffee. In the late afternoon, I often have a plain Greek yogurt for a snack. My evening treat of choice is a microwaved mug of almond milk, flavored with vanilla and cinnamon. Boy, if that wasn't the most thrilling intro I've ever written, I don't know what is. I do have a point in detailing the components of my daily menu, and it's this: I add an unholy amount of sucralose to each of those foods. That's not even counting the foods I enjoy on a regular basis that already have artificial sweetener in them: flavored creamers, sugar-free Jell-o, protein powder, and more. It's not like I'm unaware of controversy surrounding my beloved yellow Splenda packets. Some believe the human body may react to too much Splenda the same way it reacts to too much sugar, leading over time to diabetes. So why do I continue to routinely consume a sucrose derivative created by chemically substituting three chlorine atoms for three hydroxyl groups? …Right?

Neuroscientist's book explains why social connection is as important as food and shelter Details Created on Sunday, 13 October 2013 12:51 Written by Stuart Wolpert Los Angeles, California - Facebook and gossip might seem like a waste of time, but they actually serve a basic human need. A growing body of research shows that the need to connect socially with others is as basic as our need for food, water and shelter, writes UCLA professor Matthew Lieberman in his first book, "Social: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Connect," published this week by Crown Publishers. "Being socially connected is our brain's lifelong passion," said Lieberman, a professor of psychology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science and a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Lieberman is one of the founders of social cognitive neuroscience, a discipline that analyzes how brain function underlies social thinking and social behavior. "But our school system says to turn off that social brain," Lieberman said.

How to Improve All 9 Types of Intelligences Traditionally, intelligence was measured by short aptitude tests that measures competence in core subjects such as reading and mathematics. And to a large extent, intelligence is still defined by how well you do on aptitude tests. However Howard Gardner, an academician from Harvard University, thinks that being intelligent doesn’t mean that you can easily comprehend what you read or can easily solve an equation. That is why he presented the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, which states that there are actually multiple types of intelligences, 9 to be exact. In this theory, Gardner explains that there should be no single ability that defines intelligence. The hypothesis, as printed in his 1983 book ‘Frames of Mind: the Theory of Multiple Intelligences,’ proposed that several criteria should be looked upon in order to predict the intelligence of a person. Naturalist Intelligence 1) Experience the great outdoors. In order to be one with nature, you must expose yourself to nature. 1) Sing!

How Industrial Agriculture Has Thwarted Factory Farm Reforms In an interview with Yale Environment 360, Robert Martin, author of a recent study on industrial farm animal production, explains how a powerful and intransigent agriculture lobby has successfully fought off attempts to reduce the harmful environmental and health impacts of mass livestock production.

What's a Healthy Bowel Movement? Sometimes in life we have to deal with things that are less than pleasant – dirty laundry, patching up wounds, pet messes – let’s face it, moms cope with a lot of messy situations. Talking about bodily functions doesn’t generally make for polite conversation. Judging by the stunning array of constipation medications available at the drugstore, maybe we do need to talk about it. (I was looking for ipecac syrup, which they no longer carry, to keep in our emergency medical kit.) So, what constitutes a “normal” bowel movement? Type 1: Separate hard lumps, like nuts These stools lack a normal amorphous quality, because bacteria are missing and there is nothing to retain water. We are bombarded with advertisements for FIBER! I (unfortunately) found this information out first hand when my thyroid became sluggish. 1) Eat plenty of coconut oil and other high quality saturated fats. Fats are our bodies natural lubricants. 3) Stay hydrated I’m not fanatical about how much water I drink.
