DiY Liquid Hand Soap | Homemade Hand Soap | Handmade Holidays This year I am beyond thrilled to introduce you to a revamped series here at LWSL called Handmade Holidays! In past years I have shared my own holiday gift ideas, but this year I thought it would be fun to get some inspiration elsewhere. I asked eight of my favorite up-and-coming bloggers to share a simple and frugal handmade gift idea. This is a guest post is from Haley of Cheap Recipe Blog When I was about seven years old, I wanted to give my mom a really nice Christmas gift. In the weeks before Christmas, I remember asking her what she wanted for Christmas. Although she said it with conviction, I didn’t buy it. Today, 20-some years later, I know exactly what my mom was talking about. Sure, I love getting new stuff as much as anyone else. I get satisfaction from making gifts or food for them. This homemade hand soap is really fun and easy to make. Although the texture of the liquid soap isn’t exactly like the stuff you buy in the store, it cleans your hands just the same.

Lord of the Rings Pendant Hobbiton and The Shire by EmilyMadeMe DIY Painted Feathers I’ve always loved the idea of painting fake feathers, and with festival season underway it seemed like the perfect time to do it. I originally thought of these purely as decorations but then it occurred to me that they’d be a great finishing touch for a festival outfit. This is a great activity to do outside on a warm sunny day, and once you start it’s slightly addicting! What you need: fake feathers, paint (I used acrylic paint), and a paint brush. I got this paint from Utrecht and I love it. I added a little bit of water to the paint before applying to the feathers, and they absorbed the paint almost like watercolor. After the entire feather was covered I added some dots and lines with white paint. Get as creative and colorful as you want with the feathers! I wanted to add in some of the smaller brown feathers to my arrangement, so for those I kept it simple and painted them in colorful ombre shades. Arrange your feathers on a wall as beautiful spring artwork! Photos by Julia & Brigette.

Sustainable fashion reporting, organic beauty tips, DIY projects + tutorials, + natural product reviews. Home Living Published on October 31st, 2013 | by Terri Bly I would love to have been a fly on the wall – or, perhaps more likely, a secretary eavesdropping on the other side of it – back in the 1940’and 50’s when the real Mad Men were dreaming up ways to convince women they needed to spend a bunch of money on the rapidly expanding selection of household cleaning products. Because here’s the thing: You don’t need most of them. With few exceptions, commercial cleaning products are little more than overpriced perfumed surfactants. Not only are they unnecessary, most aren’t good for you, either. For those of you convinced I’m about to present a series of complicated recipes you will never make because you have a life, I will tell you now that to clean almost everything in your house, you need only 5 ingredients: Baking soda (tip: you can buy a 5-lb bag of baking soda at Mountain Rose Herbs for $12, or a 1-lb bag for $3) See what I’m saying? DIY Book Binding: Experience Journals We have two very special guests today, all the way from Singapore. They’re stopping by to share with you a little of the book arts – specifically how to easily create what we’re calling an “experience journal” with your child. I love the idea of using them to capture some of the journeys you make together, both big and small.P.S. QUESTION OF THE DAYAre you good at capturing some of the everyday moments with you kids? What are your favorite ways for doing so? When I remember, I try to use the voice memo on my phone every once in a while to capture some of my kids’ monologues. Friday Internet Crushes: Suitcase Pet Beds For the past few weeks, Pixel-the-cat has absolutely insisted upon sleeping in our paper recycling bin. This (a) makes me feel like a bad cat mom and (b) is driving me crazy, because I can’t really recycle paper with a cat in the way. I keep thinking that, if he just had a really awesome cat bed, I could have my recycling bin back. So, when I came across these suitcase pet beds while clicking around Pinterest, it was like getting struck by a bolt of lightening. DIY Vintage Suitcase Pet Bed tutorial from Fancy Seeing You Here I was originally thinking of making a bed that would sit directly on the floor, but I love the look of these contrast legs (and, let’s be honest, cats are better than you, and they like to be up off of the ground). I love that both halves of the suitcase are used in this pet bed. Vintage Renaissance is full of adorable design ideas, color combinations, and, of course, kitty photos. My cats would never stand for this sort of thing, but I really wish they would.

How to Create a Miniature Garden Today we will talk a little bit about miniature gardens. I was searching form a totally other thing and I “stumbled” on some pictures with amazing miniature gardens made in flower pots. At first, it’s better to know that this miniature gardens planted in a pot or other container, are designed to resist outside in the sun or rain. For this it’s better to use real small plants, which have a very slow growth rate. Some plants can grow up to 15 cm in a year, while others do not exceed 2 cm. These masterpieces are kept very well over time, up to 8 years without needing too much care besides watering the plants. You can create miniature gardens also in broken plant pots.
