Transforming Business with Geographic Knowledge Fall 2011 Edition By Karen Richardson, Esri Writer This article as a PDF. Patrick O'Hagan, Starbucks Coffee Company's manager of global market planning for the world's largest retail coffee chain, served some great advice to executives at the 2011 Esri Business Summit: Don't put the buggy before the horse. Warner De Gooijer, strategic analyst and project manager for global supply chain operations at Cisco Systems, Inc., was one of the speakers at the Esri Business Summit plenary session. Starbucks first began using GIS technology and data in the late 1990s. O'Hagan's team created an Esri ArcReader application that allowed staff members to access all the geodemographic and topographic data that was available for use in the company. "We held pretty true to the putting the buggy before the horse allegory, but in a futuristic sense," O'Hagan said, speaking in San Diego, California, to a group of 200 business executives from all over the world. So if you’re really responding to somebody and you don’t want all your followers to see it (but you don’t necessarily want to send a private message via DM or you can’t because they don’t follow you) then start with an @. 2. Firefox extension reveals Facebook and Twitter logins | Technology Public wireless networks have always been perceived as generally safe. Surely, the odds of having your private details stolen out of thin air must be slim to none? And surely, the ability to steal those details must be restricted to the most knowledgeable and most evil of techies? Even Google's recent announcement that it accidentally collected complete emails, usernames and passwords using its Street View cars was treated as a one-off accident. Grabbing private data from unsecured networks isn't something that the average user can do – so the average user isn't concerned. On Sunday, Seattle-based developer Eric Butler may have changed that perception for good by releasing a tool called Firesheep. Password stealing from open networks is nothing new, and the flaws that Firesheep exploits have been known for more than a decade. Firesheep, though, has an easy-to-use interface and, perhaps most importantly, a cute name.

A higher percentage of persons of African descent is generally seen in high crime, low income regions. Blacks tend to concentrate in cities. The "hispanic" category is misleading and confused. For US populations, "hispanic" typically refers to a range of mestizo populations from Mexico and Central America. As one would expect with such a confused category, crime and poverty rates associated with a high "hispanic" percentage are mixed. As with the hispanic category, the "Asian" category can refer to a wide range of population groups, from East Asians to South Asians to Southeast Asians, etc. Murder Rate per 100,000 in Large Cities Trulia Crime Maps More information, taken from official US government crime statistics, on racial disparities in US crime:
Infographic of the Day: How Your Favorite Websites Spy on You | Co.Design We all know, vaguely, that the websites we visit are tracking us with cookies and whatnot, silently scraping data on how and where we surf. But when you see the facts all laid out for you, it's gobsmacking. The Wall Street Journal just published the results of an investigation they did into tracking habits at the Web's top 50 websites, and summed up the results in this superb infographic. Here, for example, are all of the tracking sites used by Dictionary.Reference.com: And here are all of the sites where Google has embedded its own tracking software: You can even click on each company, and look at a detailed profile of exactly what their privacy policies are, concerning user data: Now, you might think that all of the data is pretty anodyne. You may not know a company called [x+1] Inc., but it may well know a lot about you. Still, is that a bad thing?

In fact, it helps to keep me sane by taking my mind off of the holiday shopping madness and dreadfully frigid weather. Well I think it’s about time for me to try my hand at one of these lists. 10.
