FBI 'weed' problem in cyber-war - Gadgets and Tech - Life & Style According to The Wall Street Journal, director James Comey has acknowledged strict FBI rules about hiring people who smoke cannabis could have complicated efforts to recruit cyber-security specialists. The agency’s policy prohibits anyone working for it who has used cannabis in the past three years. Unfortunately, hackers like their weed. “I have to hire a great workforce to compete with those cyber-criminals, and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview,” the newspaper quoted Mr Comey as saying at the White Collar Crime Institute’s annual meeting in New York. It added that when one person asked how a cannabis-using friend interested in working for the FBI should now act, Mr Comey replied: “He should go ahead and apply.” “The sort of hackers you want to hire tend to be young; the young tend to have bad habits such as smoking marijuana, and over time you’d expect them to do this less,” Dr Richard Clayton of Cambridge University said.

What 5 Things can You Do to Change the System? | The Overthinker A few weeks ago a reader on this blog asked me an interesting question that I have been mulling over for some while: can I list 5 things everyone needs to do to change the system? It’s a tall order, but I decided to give it a bash. I don’t plan to prescribe anything here, and no one should take my word for it as I’m no paragon of purism. But I have at least dabbled in all that I will suggest, and would like to invite dialogue around those suggestions, and others. One glaring problem stares me down: how can we change the system when we don’t have the power? Political pressure and consumer action have little impact if they are not attached to a grotesquely proportioned bank account – the Golden Rule (facetiously: he who has the gold makes the rules) has seen to it that we lack the clout of the corporatocracy. I figured my response should not just be things everyone should do, but things everyone can do – at least to some extent – and can scale up. 1. This comes in a series of steps. 2. 3.

Drug Truth Network raising awareness of the consequences of prohibition Special to Drug War Chronicle by Houston-based investigative journalist Clarence Walker, cwalkerinvestigate@gmail.com. Part 9 of his continuing series on Prosecutorial Misconduct and Police Corruption in Drug Cases Across America. Camden, New Jersey. Tough times in a tough town. (wikimedia.org/adam jones) A Day in the Life in Camden August 2, 2008 was a typical summer day in Camden, New Jersey, a gritty, impoverished, mostly black community across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. But as he arrived at his friend's house, Barnes encountered heavily-armed Camden police officers rushing into the house with guns drawn shouting "Police! It didn't work out that way. [Editor's Note: All quotes from Camden residents come from The Philadelphia Inquirer unless otherwise specified.] Another Camden cop, Officer Antonio Figueroa, led Barnes out of the house and threw him into a van, then left. "I don't know if there's drugs in that house. But Barnes was innocent. Taking Down the Platoon Squad

Violent Crime Drops Where People Have Access to Marijuana, Study Suggests April 11, 2014 | Like this article? Join our email list: Stay up to date with the latest headlines via email. Opponents of marijuana legalization, particularly members of law enforcement, frequently claim that liberalizing cannabis laws will lead to an increase in incidences of criminal activity, such as burglary, robbery, and driving under the influence. In the most recent paper, published online in March in the scientific journal PLoS ONE, researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas reported that the enactment of laws legalizing people’s access to medical marijuana is not associated with any rise in statewide criminal activity, and that it may even be related to reductions in incidences of violent crime. Authors reported that the passage of medical marijuana laws is not associated with an increase in any of the seven crime types assessed, but that liberalized laws are associated with decreases in certain types of violent crime. They concluded:

GMO, yeah? 5 surprises from an otherwise boring look at genetically modified crops Researchers at the USDA’s Economic Research Service have stepped back to look at the effect of genetically engineered crops since they were introduced in the U.S. It’s a pretty dry and unsurprising document, but when read carefully a few interesting things jump out. Here’s five. 1. How many GMO trials are there? Tons There have been thousands and thousands a field trials, which have translated to just a handful of different traits. Click to embiggen. 2. Herbicide-tolerant soybeans grow on more than 90 percent of the soy acres in the U.S. The fact that several researchers found no significant differences between the net returns of adopters and nonadopters of HT crops (particularly HT soybeans) despite the rapid adoption of these crops suggests that many adopters may derive nonmonetary benefits from HT adoption. In addition, farmers pay less for specialized herbicides and for the diesel needed to run a weed-busting cultivator. 3. Wow. 4. 5.

Legalize it? We think so. | Help to raise awareness of WORLDWIDE legalization Earth Sheltered Earth Sheltered Homes "Another type of building is emerging: one that actually heals the scars of its own construction. It conserves rainwater and fuel and it provides a habitat for creatures other than the human one. Maybe it will catch on, maybe it won't. We'll see." - Malcolm Wells, 2002. HappyVappy Vaporizer Nobel for legalization of drugs: bad joke or pragmatic consideration? In recent years and even decades, the authority of the Nobel Peace Prize was shaken. And its supervisors have nobody to blame but themselves. This one-time serious international prize awarded to the best of the best now more and more frequently depends on political situation and some apparently purely pragmatic considerations. Suffice it to recall the 2009 award, when it was given to the newly elected US President Barack Obama, who just could not physically managed to achieve any success on this post. But he achieved it later, for example, in Afghanistan. In 2012, the prize was awarded to the European Union for the protection of human rights. Moreover, President of Institute of National Strategy Mikhail Remizov believes that it has never been ranged among authoritative prizes. "It was, in fact, usurped by representatives of the European left-wing liberal intelligentsia, who use very subjective, arbitrary criteria while selecting nominees and winners.
