Mendel90
I never understood why Mendel has a triangular prism frame. The way I see it, the frame only has two functions: - To hold the Y bars in a flat plane and to support the tops of the Z bars. It isn't good at doing either:The main forces on the Z bars are in the direction of the X-axis and the frame has no strength in that direction. It wobbles when the X-carriage changes direction. It also doesn't ensure the Y bars are in a flat plane because there is nothing to ensure one end triangle is not rotated slightly relative to the other. After a trip down a cobbled street in Sheffield my Mendel behaves as if one corner of the bed is lower than the other three. Other problems are: - It gets smaller at the top, so the maximum Z travel is limited by the extruder colliding with the bars. Two flat sheets are mounted at right angles to form the XY and XZ planes. The buttresses are bigger than they need to be. I used B&Q style fixing blocks to fasten the sheets together. Merry Christmas!
Megatronics 2.0
Megatronics Release status: Working After using RAMPS for a long time I am still quite fond of it. There are some aspects of the board however that make it unusable for future electronics, which should be reliable and cheap. Also the wiring can we a bit fiddly. I have combined the Arduino MEGA and RAMPS boards into a single board solution. Megatronics is based on many famous open-source products including: Arduino Mega 2560, RAMPS, SD Ramps. Megatronics has a powerful Atmega2560 processor with 256 kB memory, running at 16Mhz. The board is supplied with a Marlin firmware. Restart Arduino IDE and select Megatronics as board. To test the functionality of the board, a test firmware is available. By connecting the 12V lines, the MOSFETs should have power and their LEDs will blink in order. Also the stepper motors should turn when connected, with the 12V lines and stepper drivers in place. These three tests will verify the basic functionality of the board. 1. + (5v output) 2. - (ground) 3.

The Free Universal Construction Kit
Ever wanted to connect your Legos and Tinkertoys together? Now you can — and much more. Announcing the Free Universal Construction Kit: a set of adapters for complete interoperability between 10 popular construction toys. Fig. 1. The Free Universal Construction Kit. Overview Video by Riley Harmon for F.A.T. F.A.T. The Free Universal Construction Kit offers adapters between Lego, Duplo, Fischertechnik, Gears! Motivation Our kids are already doing it! Opening doors to new creative worlds is one major reason we created the Free Universal Construction Kit. The Kit offers a “best of all worlds” approach to play and learning that combines the advantages of each toy system. Finally, in producing the Free Universal Construction Kit, we hope to demonstrate a model of reverse engineering as a civic activity: a creative process in which anyone can develop the necessary pieces to bridge the limitations presented by mass-produced commercial artifacts. Build a Laser 3D Printer - Stereolithography at Home
Here is how to make a Stereolithography 3D Printer. It is still a bit of a work in progress but so far it is working pretty well. This is mainly an experiment which started as a Delta Robot Stereolithography Printer but ended as a more traditional Cartesian Stereolithography Printer. "I'll be honest, we're throwing science at the walls here to see what sticks. No idea what it'll do." - Cave Johnson Stereolithography (SL or SLA from Stereolithography Apparatus) is an additive manufacturing process using a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer "resin" and a UV laser to build parts one layer at a time. I have wanted a 3D Printer for a while now and there are some very reasonably priced kits available like the Makerbot, Ultimaker and the RepRap project. I decided to enter this in the Epilog Challenge Contest because I could really use a laser cutter :-) I also have some ideas how to redesign this project, for creation on a laser cutter. This project is Open Source Hardware.
