Fils d'immigrés tchèques catholiques, il grandit pendant les années de crise économique près des aciéries de Pittsburgh. Une maladie infectieuse contractée en 1937 l'oblige à garder le lit le plus clair de son temps. Il se forge alors un imaginaire sans limite. Après des études au Carnegie Tech en 1949, il part pour New York et devient dessinateur publicitaire. En avril 1961, un ensemble de 5 panneaux est exposé en vitrine d'un grand magasin de mode. Grand consommateur de presse people, il détourne des photos de stars puis s'attèle à la série des "Catastrophes". Son atelier surnommé la Factory tourne a plein.
Roberto Ysais, Vern Evans, Mert Turkoglu Roberto Ysáis is a Native Californian of Mexican decent. He received his Bachelors Degree in Psychology at the University of Loyola in Los Angeles. It was at this institution where he was introduced to photography. Throughout his 35-year career as a versatile photographer, he continues to be profoundly influenced by the ancient roots of his culture.
