The 15 Best Miramax Films

The 15 Best Miramax Films
Today, the indie world and the film world at large lost a giant in the field, watching Disney close the doors and turn the lights off on Miramax. As sad a day like today is, and as uncertain as the future is, we can still hold on to the memories. Most of them are now on Blu-ray. Without further tears in our eyes, we’d like to remember Miramax for their 15 Best Films. If you’re like me and Rob Hunter, your rental queue is already full. 15. The Pitch: Even if Rob Hunter doesn’t think Larry Clark’s harsh film about drug and sexual abandon amongst the youth in NYC is well acted, he’s wrong, and the movie is brilliant and challenging. 14. The Pitch: You probably haven’t seen this odd and creepy little flick, but if you have consider yourself one of the lucky few. 13. The Pitch: This film is mostly known for its twist, which is a shame, because the entire film is a thing of beauty. 12. The Pitch: This is the movie that put director Atom Egoyan on the map. 11.

The 50 Best Movies of the Decade (2000-2009) If comparing music from Gillian Welch and Outkast in our 50 Best Albums of the Decade is like apples and oranges, ranking films like Amélie, The Dark Knight and Mulholland Drive is more like apples, ice cream and foie gras. But despite the wild variety among our 50 Best Movies from 2000-2009, each is an exquisitely made, exceptionally satisfying piece of cinema that we believe will endure well after the decade has ended. There are masters like Martin Scorcese and Lars Von Trier, and relative newcomers like Fernando Meirelles and Anna Boden. There are documentaries, comedies and dramas, as well as animated films and even a super-hero flick. 50. 49. 48. 47. 46. 45. 44. 43. 42. 41. What’s Your Favourite Podcast? I have requirements for about three hours worth of podcasts each week, because that’s the total amount of time I’m at the gym. Unfortunately, my current carefully-selected list of podcasts always falls a little short of three hours. Here’s what I listen to religiously: CBC Radio Dispatches – “Dispatches features documentaries and reports by CBC Radio’s correspondents and other journalists on assignment outside of Canada.”BBC From Our Own Correspondent – Probably my favourite. In the right mood, I’ll also listen to the CBC’s Best of Ideas and a short story by Cory Doctorow. Looking down the list, I’m clearly predisposed to professionally-produced, scripted monologues. Nicos Poulantzas and the Capitalist State Nicos Poulantzas is a name that, today, is little known and seldom discussed out with certain academic circles. On the few occasions that the Greek Marxist is referenced by the organized Left, it is usually in relation to his public debate with Ralph Miliband on the nature of the State; or as an alleged proponent of Structural Marxism after Althusser. However, neither context provides a particularly accurate representation of this dynamic thinker: the Miliband debate only provides a small detail of Poulantzas’s rich investigations into the capitalist State; whilst reducing his lifelong political researches to the category of ‘Structural Marxism’ is inaccurate and unfair. Overview Poulantzas identified hegemony as strategically specific to the capitalist mode of production (CMP). The Power Bloc The first thing to examine in relation to continued supremacy of the dominant classes over the dominated is the specific make-up of each respective ‘bloc’. Against Instrumentalism
