Snapstick Brings The Entire Web To Your TV With A Snap Of The Wrist. Get it? Viewing Internet content on HDTV is a painfully tricky affair these days but Snapstick thinks they can succeed where others have crashed and burned. Forget Google TV, Boxee Box and Apple TV for a moment. Snapstick’s whole philosophy seems different and that’s where it might have a chance. Rather than relying on a box connected to the TV (Note: there’s still a box connected to the TV) for navigation and discovery either through a painful onscreen keyboard or a clumsy full size keyboard, content for Snapstick is found either via a computer or iOS device running the Snapstick app. The creators say that this method drops any barriers that others like Google TV and Boxee Box must deal with. The concept is based around how many consumers already find their content. The hardware works a lot like current streaming boxes.

50 Apps That Socialize Your TV | The Seevibes Blog 21 Nov. 2011 In 2010, MIT’s Technology Review listed Social TV as one of the 10 most important emerging technologies. It isn’t surprising to see new companies being formed with the intention to tap a vein of gold in this new market. Mobile applications are the most popular offerings: check-ins, interactive TV guides, universal remotes, platforms for real-time conversations on Facebook, Twitter, chat … everything is being tried to create the ideal companion for TV viewers. Last February, we surveyed the Social TV applications on the market at that time. The following 50 Social TV applications are grouped into six categories. Automated or manual Check-in/ Tune-in apps (12) GetGlue GetGlue is a leading social network for entertainment. The Race For The Second Screen: Five Apps That Are Shaping Social TV It’s easy to understand why 2012 is shaping up to be the year of social TV. Consumers are turning to the so-called second screen like never before. A 2011 whitepaper prepared by Yahoo/Nielsen reported that as many as 86 percent of viewers use mobile devices while watching TV. While many think that number might be high, it signals a trend in consumer behavior that cannot be ignored. Broadcasters and marketers are feeling the heat of both risk and reward. Risk if they do nothing and cede the second screen to Twitter and Angry Birds; reward if they find a way to deliver companion experiences, drive engagement--and expand ad inventory. One result has been investment flowing into social TV apps, in what some--like MIT research scientist Marie-Jose Montpetit--are already comfortable calling a bubble. "2012 is the year that people will think, rightly maybe, that they will make a lot of money out of social television, for the first time ever,” she says. [Image: Brisbane/Shutterstock]

Companion TV app Umami to hit app store Tuesday Update: You can now download the Umami app for iPad here. Social TV startup Umami raised $1.66 million in August to launch a TV app for linear programming that would be cheaper than a network creating their own app, leveraging a “publishing platform.” The app will be available for iPad tomorrow and is launching with a network partner, the National Geographic Channel for the channel’s “Expedition Week” and “Knights of Mayhem” show this week. What is Umami and how does it work? Co-founder and CEO Scott Rosenberg explained Umami’s key offerings. Umami’s play at getting Networks hooked: “As we’ve discussed, Umami is not just a consumer app, but also a publishing platform that brings simplicity and scale to the creation of synchronous companion TV experiences for TV networks and content partners. Rosenberg (who’s been at Rovi, TV Guide, ReplayTV) and Bryan Slavin (who’s been at LightningCast, Leap Wireless) clearly proved that their experience matters by launching with a network. Yahoo!’

The company says the app (which is launching soon) will highlight shows with “check-in bonuses.” Function(x) says its working with several networks and production companies to create second-screen experiences on Viggle. While there are lots of similar competitors in this space, Viggle promises better rewards beyond badges and stickers. What those rewards will be exactly, has yet to be released. Sillerman comes with a long history of entrepreneurship in radio and live entertainment. As we predicted a few weeks ago, social TV is just beginning to heat up.
