Steve Jobs's seven key decisions When Steve Jobs officially returned to Apple 15 years ago, it marked a moment of rebirth for the ailing company. Within eight months (September 17, 1997, to be exact), he assumed the mantle of Interim CEO (later abbreviated to “iCEO” for cuteness) and executed a stark and keen strategy to save Apple from oblivion. Almost a year after his untimely passing, it's a good time to look back at seven key moves Jobs made to right the Apple ship during his early days as iCEO. This is not meant to be an exhaustive or complete study: Jobs made dozens of decisions a day. I don't include some of his most important decisions—for example, the ones to pursue the development of innovative new products such as the iMac, OS X, and the iPod. Instead, I'm thinking about the operational decisions that put his company on the track it still follows to this day.

Mimicry beats consciousness in gaming's Turing test - tech - 25 September 2012 - New Scientist - Aurora By Celeste Biever The Turing test might still be too hard for software to crack – but two programs have already aced video gaming’s answer to this famous evaluation of machine intelligence. The two winning programs, or bots, relied on strategies of direct human mimicry to win an annual software tournament called BotPrize – and beat an intriguing rival based on a stripped-down model of human consciousness. As in the original Turing test, BotPrize bots attempt to convince human judges that they too are human. But whereas Turing test bots are judged on their ability to converse, in BotPrize, it’s the ability to play and navigate the 3D shoot-’em-up video game Unreal Tournament in a human-like manner that counts. Multiple bots and human judges play simultaneously, all-against-all, and anonymously, in the same arena of battle.

Mystery Tricycle - 7 Alternatives to Pandora and Last.FM - Aurora Whether you are annoyed by the ads on Pandora, the limited number of skips, or the abyss of cruel 30-second song teasers from Last.FM, many online listeners are growing weary of mainstream methods of hearing new music. While the Pandora algorithm is strong, and the Last.FM related artists tool is pretty useful, don’t fool yourself in to thinking that there aren’t other great ways to expose yourself to new music in the depths of cyberspace. Here are 7 alternatives to Pandora and Last.FM that will infuse your day with an uninterrupted stream of music that large record companies haven’t managed to squash under their thumbs yet. Instead of “genomes”, StumbleAudio uses listeners’ favoritism as well as buying pattern data from online music stores to make suggestions.
