As a teacher, I was obsessed with cultivating a love of reading in my students. I love to read, loved it as a kid too. I'm equally compelled to ensure that my own child loves reading -- and he does. Here are ten suggestions for how any teacher, teaching any subject can participate in this mission, and how parents and administrators can help. Read. Seven Strategies to Teach Students Text Comprehension
1. Monitoring comprehension Students who are good at monitoring their comprehension know when they understand what they read and when they do not. They have strategies to "fix" problems in their understanding as the problems arise. Research shows that instruction, even in the early grades, can help students become better at monitoring their comprehension. Comprehension monitoring instruction teaches students to: Be aware of what they do understandIdentify what they do not understandUse appropriate strategies to resolve problems in comprehension 2. It's good to have your priorities in order as we become older, and expectantly wiser? Knowing the value of money is important. Knowing the value of time is huge too! Ten Dollars is Ten Dollars George and his wife Bessie went to the county fair every year. And each year George would say to Bessie, "I sure would like to ride in that there crop dustin', acrobatic airplane." After many years, George and Bessie went to the fair as usual, and George said, "Bessie, I'm 81 years old. Bessie replied, "George, that there airplane ride costs ten dollars. The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, I've seen you here year after year. "Tell you what, I'll make you a deal. George and Bessie agreed. When they landed, the pilot looked at George: "Well, I don't believe it George, I did everything I could think of to get you to yell, but you didn't."
