Scientists Finally Unlock The Secrets Behind Superconductivity Scientists from the University of Cambridge believe they have solved the longstanding mystery of where superconductivity emerges in high-temperature superconductors. Equipped with this knowledge, scientists may be able to tap into the astronomical potential of these materials which could have applications in a wide variety of technologies, from magnetic levitating trains to supercomputers. Through understanding where superconductive properties originate, scientists can now search for similar characteristics in other materials which should significantly speed up the search for new superconductors. In this recent report, scientists reveal that superconductivity emerges from twisted pockets of electrons in the material which are the result of charge density waves, or ripples of electrons. Superconductivity was first discovered in 1911 by a scientist called Heike Kamerlingh Onnes whilst he was investigating the properties of metals at low temperatures.
Hardest Synthetic Diamond Yet Created A team of researchers based at Yanshan University has produced a new synthetic diamond that’s remarkably robust, outperforming natural diamonds and other synthetic diamonds in both thermal stability and pressure tests. The results have been published in Nature. Diamond is the hardest natural material known to man and consequently it is used in a wide variety of industrial settings such as aerospace engineering, mining and car manufacture. Its hardness and wear resistance makes it a particularly useful material for cutting tools but unfortunately poor stability at very high temperatures has restricted its applications in industry. Researchers are therefore turning to synthetic diamonds in order to overcome the limits of natural diamonds. In nature, diamond occurs only as single crystals and while these materials are pretty hardy, they’re expensive and tend to wear unevenly. [via Nature and Live Science].

Technologies that hide objects from one of our senses are referred to as invisibility cloaks, even when the sense is not vision. 27 Genius New Products You Had No Idea Existed Nearby Exoplanet Is Best Candidate For Supporting Life Finding new exoplanets is always awesome, but discovering exoplanets within the star’s habitable zone are exponentially more exciting. A team led by Robert Wittenmyer of the University of New South Wales has announced the discovery of the Super-Earth Gliese 832 c, which could very well turn out to be the best candidate for extraterrestrial life discovered to date. It’s also fairly close, cosmologically speaking, which adds to the intrigue. The team’s paper has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, but has been made available online in an open access format on arXiv.org. Gliese 832 is a red dwarf star that is located 16.1 light-years away in the constellation Grus. The planet is about 5.4 times more massive than Earth and has an Earth Similarity Index (ESI) of 0.81, which compares an exoplanet’s radius, escape velocity, surface temperature, and density to Earth. Gliese 832 c has an orbital period of only 36 days.
