The Myth of Quality Time Photo EVERY summer for many years now, my family has kept to our ritual. All 20 of us — my siblings, my dad, our better halves, my nieces and nephews — find a beach house big enough to fit the whole unruly clan. We journey to it from our different states and time zones. We tensely divvy up the bedrooms, trying to remember who fared poorly or well on the previous trip. And we fling ourselves at one another for seven days and seven nights. That’s right: a solid week. The answer to the second question is yes, but to the first, an emphatic no. I used to think that shorter would be better, and in the past, I arrived for these beach vacations a day late or fled two days early, telling myself that I had to when in truth I also wanted to — because I crave my space and my quiet, and because I weary of marinating in sunscreen and discovering sand in strange places. There’s simply no real substitute for physical presence. We can try. But people tend not to operate on cue.
Psykologian historiassa on ollut erikoisia kokeita - Tiede - Päivän lehti - Helsingin Sanomat 1919: Pikku-Albert oppi pelkäämään eläimiäBehavioristisen psykologian johtohahmo John B. Watson halusi osoittaa vuonna 1919, että Pavlovin koirakokeiden tunnetuksi tekemä klassinen ehdollistaminen tehoaa myös ihmisiin. Tunnetuimmassa kokeessa Watson valitsi jatko-opiskelija Rosalie Raynerin kanssa koehenkilöksi paikallisesta sairaalasta alle vuoden ikäisen lapsen. Watson antoi Albert-vauvan leikkiä laboratoriossa rotan kanssa. Watsonin mukaan tämä sai lapsen pelkäämään rottaa. Lopulta Albert kammosi Raynerin turkistakkia ja joulupukiksi pukeutuneen Watsonin tekopartaa. Watson ei koskaan opettanut Albertia eroon peloistaan, vaan lapsi sai jäädä elämään niiden kanssa. Vuonna 2014 kaksi amerikkalaista psykologia onnistui jäljittämään todennäköisen Albertin. Ei ole kiistatonta tietoa, mistä koirapelko johtui.
6 Surprising Study Techniques From A Valedictorian Everyone knows that to be a top student, you’ve got to study hard, write great papers, and ace your exams. But there’s so much more to it than that. A large part of academic success comes from the everyday habits and personalized strategies you create for yourself. Eat During Exams Taking an exam is like a marathon for your mind. Study In Bed A lot of study guides warn against studying in bed. Cut Back On Study Groups Throughout my academic career, I avoided study groups like the plague. That’s not to say study groups are useless, however. Do The Readings After Class Don’t get me wrong: if you can do the assigned reading before class, you should. Maintain Silence After Exams At the end of a test, what usually happens? Play Mozart While You Study Since junior high school, I have always studied with good old Amadeus playing in the background. I’m not saying that you have to follow these techniques to become a great student.
How to Read a Book a Week Executive Summary Reading gives us access to great ideas, allows us peek into the minds of the smartest people, and gives us fuel to be valuable contributors in conversations. But who really has time to read every book that would help us as business leaders? Everyone, according to the author, because the key to reading is not taking in every word, but understanding the concepts that the author presents. Following his advice, you have the potential to read at least one nonfiction book a week. The formula comes down to being engaged with the material, keeping your mind alert, and actively trying to figure out what the book really means. It was the late 1980s and I was sitting in a university lecture hall listening to Abbie Hoffman, an author and an activist, ranting about my generation’s indifference. “It’s such a unique opportunity to be here,” I said to her, “to be part of these conversations with smart, thoughtful people.” “Oh, don’t be silly,” she responded. I told him I was.
Secrets of Straight-A Students Getting good grades in college is not an easy feat. It takes a lot of time, dedication and effort. Getting a passing grade after studying hard for a test is hugely rewarding. However, how is it that some students can study the same amount of time and make an A+? As maddening as it can be to watch straight-A students seemingly breeze through classes that are bringing you down, there are many things that you can learn from how they do it. Straight A students have also figured out the art of test-taking. Did you enjoy this article?
The Busy Person’s Lies HOW’S life? Oh, busy. So goes the mindless modern conversation — a constant assertion of the scarcity of time. A December Gallup poll found that 61 percent of working Americans said they did not have enough time to do the things they wanted to do. In an attempt to understand this frenzy, I spent the past 12 months studying my own time during what might turn out to be the busiest year of my life. I had another baby in January 2015, bringing my total to four under the age of 8. So I logged on a spreadsheet in half-hour blocks every one of the 8,784 hours that make up a leap year. After hitting hour 8,784 at 5 a.m. on April 20, I started analyzing my logs and adding up the categories. These data points exist, but there was plenty of evidence of a calmer life. This wasn’t my first time analyzing time logs. I know that professionals tend to overestimate work hours; we remember our busiest weeks as typical. There are 168 hours in a week. Museoksi muutetun lontoolaisen asunnon alakerrasta löytyy sohva, jolla psykoanalyysi syntyi.
How to Earn Straight A’s When I started high school, I decided I was going to become a straight-A student, even though I’d never done that before. It seemed like an interesting goal to pursue as a 14-year old. Since school was the center of my life back then, I figured I might as well succeed at it. On my first freshman English essay, I got a C+. I was a bit miffed. Instead of interpreting that C+ to mean that I was going to fail at my goal, I asked, “Why didn’t I get an A? Whenever I got less than an A in a class assignment, I kept asking, “What do I need to do differently to get an A?” If I wasn’t sure, I asked the teacher and listened carefully. Soon I locked onto the mindset and habits that were required to earn and maintain straight As, and I kept that up for 4 years. The surprise is that it probably took less work to earn all As than it did to earn lower grades. Students who earn lower grades often work harder because they use a sloppy approach. To an A student, a B is an error. We set our own standards.
