Tea for Three: Shunga Inspired Art by Jeff Faeber (NSFW) » Rush Blog–MUSIC | FASHION | ART | CULTURE “As one who has “fallen from grace,” as it were, I have a natural interest in the underdog, the discarded and unwanted. Hence, I often paint on or incorporate cardboard, trash, society’s forgotten, landfill-bound material. I react to what I feel is often an overly sanitised, saccharine façade that is projected on us by mass commercialisation, or groupthink (or religion or politics or whatever.) There is often beauty in despair. I hope to find hope in “ugliness,” in muted colours. While not dwelling on cynicism, I try to expand the scope of beauty by having it encompass and confront the abuses of “civilised” society, the decadence, the rape of the environment, narrow-mindedness—what is not generally regarded as pretty.” View NSFW images below. For those of us who don’t know, Shunga–according to Wikipedia–is a Japanese term meaning “erotic art.” What that statement is, however, is up to your discretion. Janine Gallizia. Interview. How did happen the transformation of your focus of interests from design to watercolors? I worked approximately 10 years in the design industry; in Melbourne, Sydney, London and Brussels. It is a passionate and inspiring field that taught me many things that are of great importance and use to me today. Janine Gallizia. Perhaps the most important thing that I gained from my time in the design field was an acute understanding of the client and market needs and the understanding of how to achieve these needs with a visual vocabulary; using shape, colour, value and technique. Janine Gallizia. Who has influenced you the most in watercolor media? When it comes to artists, past or present, I have been inspired by many. Janine Gallizia. You have a very sophisticated palette which consists of natural colors as it seems to me. Janine Gallizia Your painting works give an impression of someone`s dreams or memories. My technique is 80% wet-in-wet and moist-on-wet. Janine Gallizia. Janine Gallizia.

Remarkable Animals Painted in Ink by George Boorujy Brooklyn based artist George Boorujy creates impossibly detailed ink paintings of North American birds and other animals, often pouring numerous photographs and visiting zoos where the animals are kept before embarking on a piece. Boorujy challenges the viewer to confront both the animal and their preconceived notions about it. Through their gaze an interaction evolves with the wild that otherwise would have to be sought out or birthed from happenstance. However fleeting our exchanges with the wild are, an impression of their presence marks our memories. There is something mystical at play; a silent exchange that either moves us towards awareness or heightens our fear of the unknown. George’s latest solo show, Blood Memory, opens at P.P.O.W. gallery in New York on March 15.
