41 WAYS TO CREATE AND HEIGHTEN SUSPENSE According to top New York literary agent Noah Lukeman (The Plot Thickens), if a writer can maintain suspense throughout the story, many readers will keep reading even if the characters are undeveloped and the plot is weak. Clearly, suspense is a vital tool, yet most books on writing only mention it in passing and few devote much space to its creation and development. I've written 27 novels, and some of them have been rather successful, but Lukeman's observation came as a revelation. Accordingly, I've scoured my writing notes for the past quarter century, and the books and articles I've read on storytelling, in order to compile a comprehensive list of ways to create suspense. Here it is. My sources are listed at the end. At its simplest, a story consists of a character (the hero) who wants something badly, and an adversary (the obstacle) who is trying equally hard to prevent the hero from getting what he wants. Suspense comes from readers' anticipation of what's going to happen next.

How to Use Mental Illness in Your Writing | Fantasy-Faction Sunday, April 8, 2012 Mental illness is always a tricky topic to discuss, especially in the politically correct society of the present. I can tell you though, I work in a psychiatric hospital, and the patients there are often more than happy to discuss their illnesses, whether you would like them to or not. This is how I came to meet Jim Bob, the recovering-alcoholic duckling who likes nothing more than to chill out with his issue of Cosmo. The most famous mentally ill character in fiction is of course Gollum/Sméagol. Gollum’s illness very definitely affects his behaviour and actions throughout the novels. Another example of mental illness in fantasy that some readers may be aware of is in Brian Jacques’ Mariel of Redwall. Mental illness can be used to add layers of depth to a character, but they do not need to be as extreme as the examples stated above. So, how to write a character with a mental illness? 7 Essential Elements of Character Creation Last week Nikki Jefford requested a post on developing characters. There are many different approaches toward developing characters for a story. Last year I wrote a post on different ways to get to know your characters which might help anyone getting started. The techniques I included were the use of visual aids, character questionnaires and family trees. No matter what method an author chooses to adopt, there are a number of elements that are essential to include in the creation of every character: The name: Many writers will start with a name and build on the character from there. The appearance: There are a lot of factors to consider for the appearance of a character: their height and build, how they project themselves, if they have any scars or tattoos, and so much more. The motivation: The easiest way I get to know my characters is to find out what drives them. How Much of My World Do I Build? First, let me say that worldbuilding is an essential skill for every writer, regardless of genre. Not all writers need to concentrate on all areas of worldbuilding, but every writer must do some worldbuilding if he hopes to have a novel that is coherent, consistent, and real. I was first given the assignment to write a death scene as a stand-alone piece when I was a freshman in college, in my very first creative writing class. I chose to write a creative non-fiction piece about a relative of mine. The piece ended up being fairly successful; it was published in my college newspaper and I received a lot of very kind comments about it.
