Big Data Means More Than Big Profits - Jim Fruchterman by Jim Fruchterman | 8:00 AM March 19, 2013 Big Data is all the rage in Silicon Valley. From Facebook to Netflix, companies are tracking and analyzing our searches, our purchases, and just about every other online activity that will give them more insight into who we are and what we want. A Pilot Centre for Excellence in Public Sector Design [Ken Pettifer is acting Deputy Secretary at the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education] One of the ideas included in the Australian Public Service (APS) Innovation Action Plan released in 2011 was the establishment of an APS Design Centre that could assist in developing and testing new approaches to complex policy challenges and to enhance government program delivery. Weather Stations 3.0 - OpenWeatherMap We are glad to announce our new API version for managing your personal weather stations - Weather Stations API 3.0 (beta). It went through some essential changes in comparison with the previous version. The main improvement is that users now have more flexible control of their stations and allowed to share and transfer data related to them. New API in RESTful style makes this process easy and convenient. In the previous version user's account was limited to single station, but with our new version users are allowed to add as many stations as they need. A government report in 2003 found that 86% of all indigenous Alaskan villages – 184 communities – were experiencing consequences from climate change. The most destructive of those effects were erosion, flooding and extreme storms. Some of the villages considered most at risk are: Kivalina
The Square Kilometre Array: The World’s Ultimate Big Data Challenge John Kelly, Senior Vice President and Director, IBM Research By John Kelly A few weeks ago, I shared a dinner table in Johannesburg with Adrian Tiplady, one of the managers of Square Kilometre Array South Africa, which is managing the country’s involvement in the Square Kilometre Array astronomy project. The SKA is one of the most ambitious science efforts ever launched. Global Public Innovation Network - Ash Center The Global Public Innovation Network, established in 2002, is a collaborative network of 10 public policy awards programs from around the globe. With support from the Ford Foundation and contributions by the individual programs, the Innovation Network gathers and disseminates knowledge about innovations in public service provision, public action, and governance. These innovations represent significant contributions to the collective well-being of citizens and to the reduction of social, economic, political, gender, and ethnic inequalities. By sharing successful local practices through an international network, the impact of each awards program can extend far beyond its country’s borders.
