What the 90s meant: in with hedonism, out with believing in something “A shattered nation longs to care about stupid bullshit again,” read the Onion headline of 3 October, 2001. It was quite hard to be funny after 9/11, and most people didn’t try, but the satirical news service had been drilling away and, a month in, they hit it: a seam of truth that wasn’t pompous or vitriolic or self-pitying, and would have sounded self-flagellating were it not for the fact that it was true. All we cared about in the 90s was stupid bullshit. Plus ça change plus c’est la même chose, you may be thinking. Stupid bullshit is all we care about now. But it is not the same: the triviality of the subject matter – whether or not Britney Spears was a virgin, or Jason Donovan was gay, or Nicole Kidman was too tall for Tom Cruise – was only the beginning of a taut, scornful, determined rejection of seriousness. At the time, we didn’t say “ironic”, we said “post-ironic”. The weight of the inauthenticity was enormous and incredibly Nineties. Anyway, let’s not be downhearted!

Lapped Seam Tutorial - Sewtorial This is a very simple seam. It works best with fabrics that don’t fray, such as felt and leather. Madchester, grunge chic and Kate Moss: how the 90s shaped our world | Fashion Early on in the new series of This is England, we see Lol working as a school dinner lady and dealing with her old friend Gadget, who has arrived to cadge a free lunch. He is dressed in a bucket hat and an oversized hoodie in colours so bright you want to turn down the contrast on your screen. You immediately know that we’re in 1990, the era of “Madchester” T-shirts, bowl cuts and centre partings, and ridiculously flared Joe Bloggs jeans. Decades rarely behave as we’d want them to, of course, falling neatly into 10-year segments to facilitate retrospectives. If we want to trace the roots of Gadget’s getup, we have to go back to the summer of 1988, when the acid house explosion turned the clubworld day-glo. Fuelled by a potent mix of house music, MDMA and a restless feeling that something needed to change, the scene swept across the clubs of London and Manchester like a tsunami, clearing out everything that had come before it. It’s easy to forget now how grim things were back then.

Why Fitness Is Having a Moment in Fashion If there’s anything fashion people are as fanatical about as getting their hands on their favorite designers’ collections each season, it’s getting into their favorite workout classes each week. They all have their alliances, whether it’s to a particular yoga teacher, a state-of-the-art Pilates reformer class or a boutique spin studio, and, naturally, they're not going to show up in just any old pair of sweats. Having the right high-end workout gear has become just as important. Of course, this phenomenon is not limited to the fashion community, though the industry has seen an uptick in sports-inspired clothing and activewear as daywear in 2014. Activewear sales are booming, and the active sports category is the fastest-growing segment of the market. In line with that thinking, a number of traditional ready-to-wear and accessories brands have added an activewear category to their offerings in recent months, with H&M, Old Navy, Juicy Couture and Free People among them.

how berlin's rave fashion was born Fashion and music go together, like, well, fashion and music. Not just in fashion metropolises like New York or London, who have a long history of mingling street, sound and style, but also in a very special way Berlin in the 90s, and in a way less documented too. Music inspires fashion, it creates a subculture, but it inspires the fashion industry too when that subculture becomes a lucrative target group. In 1994 two and a half million young people were dancing in German - mainly in Berlin - raves; this group had the buying power of about five billion Deutschmarks between them, and out of them a new fashion style was born in Germany, clubwear, fashion for going out in, fashion to rave in, fashion to make you stand out whilst you danced away. "The fashion came from dancing," recalls Frank Schütte, one of the most well-known figures in nightlife and fashion in Berlin's 90s techno scene, dressing the raving masses with his label 3000. Internet Advertising | Key Note The UK Internet advertising market is enjoying a period of rapid growth at present. The market has been boosted by the roll out of new technologies and services which have resulted in increasing numbers of people gaining access to superfast broadband and fourth-generation (4G) mobile network services. The take-up of smartphones — which are the most widely owned Internet-enabled device in the country — alongside laptops has also contributed greatly to the strength and growth of the sector. This has resulted in estimates for Internet advertising expenditure in 2015 being placed 12.6% higher than the figure for 2014, with Internet advertising sitting as the largest and most dynamic segment of the overall advertising industry in the UK. Search, display and classified are the three main sectors of the Internet advertising market and all three continued to achieve year-on-year growth in expenditure in 2015.

"Athleisure" Is Getting Added to the Dictionary | Details Congratulations to personal trainers, lovers of sweatpants, and guys who wear basketball shorts in public: Merriam-Webster plans to add athleisure to the next edition of its dictionary, permanently cementing clothing that was once merely trendy as pieces people just wear. The New York Times' fashion critic, Vanessa Friedman, reported the news in a piece attempting to define what, exactly, athleisure means. The dictionary firm will define it as "casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use." Perhaps no one at Merriam-Webster owns a pair of John Elliott's $385 boucle sweatpants or one of T by Alexander Wang's $470 intarsia hoodies, which you probably wouldn't wear on the elliptical, even if you could. The last time Merriam-Webster updated its dictionary, this past May, it added more than 1,700 new entries, including WTF, photobomb, and clickbait.

Trendspotting | Mastering Sports Luxe As Hong Kong begins to heat up, it’s time to look for thinner layers and lighter footwear. That’s why I’m turning to the sports luxe trend. Despite sports luxe trending for a while already, designers have found new ways to reinvent the look. Mesh, flat sandals and sporty silhouettes have been given a high-fashion makeover, and we have Alexander Wang’s sneaker-inspired Spring/Summer 2015 collection to thank. Dior, Burberry Prorsum and DKNY showed off their designer trainers, while the genuine sports brand Adidas Originals is doing a skin-deep collection with singer Kanye West. Clockwise from top left: Mesh dress from Alexander Wang’s SS15 collection; trainers from Burberry Prorsum, DKNY and Dior. 1. Bomber jackets, boxy backpacks and sweatpants made of luxurious fabrics have frequented the high streets in Paris and Milan.
