100 Incredibly Useful and Interesting Web Sites
Even as the Web has become more entertaining--and certainly better looking--over the past 15 years, it has also become much more useful and practical, as the 100 sites in this feature will demonstrate. I've organized the sites in the list by the type of task they help you with. It is not a ranking; in each category I recommend sites that specialize in a different area than the others. I've also mixed in a smattering of sites that you might not use every day, but that provide ready answers to specific questions like "How can I learn to rumba?" How to Fix Internet Embarrassments and Improve Your Online Reputation
I agree with all that's in the article, and I have actually done some of this. First of all, I'm not on Facebook, which helps tremendously. When I got my current job last month, I wondered why searching my name on Google Image Search came up with an inordinate amount of pictures of scantily clad women. As it turned out, on a musician site, a member had my name listed in his signature as a good trader, and he had posted in some kind of babe thread in another area of the site I had never gone to. Additionally, in order to de-emphasize old and outdated information about me (blog comments I made with my full name, forum posts I made years ago, etc), I made sure that valid information about me was up-to-date, by updating my personal website, my Flickr, my Picasa Web Albums, and my Google Profile. What was hilarious was my parents' reactions to my Google search results.
12 Useful and Free Downloadable Web Design Books
There are a multitude of books (whether in digital format or print) that cover every possible aspect of web design, each one is unique and offers a personalized opportunity for the author to both educate, inspire, and guide the reader through there knowledge. In this post rather than offer all of my favorite web design books, I have listed 12 books that I have either downloaded and read (or at least scanned through), or I have bookmarked with the whole-hearted intention of eventually reading it (Ruby Best Practices), and the best thing of all? All of these books are completely FREE, in digital format anyway (PDF or HTML). I have not offered a critique of each book, as I feel that would not be fair on the author. If someone spends so much of their valuable time (in some cases months and months) and writes an entire book on web design, in my eyes they deserve only praise and appreciation. I hope you find these books useful. The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web (HTML)
It's official: to protect baby's brain, turn off the TV
A decade ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggested that parents limit TV consumption by children under two years of age. The recommendations were based as much on common sense as science, because studies of media consumption and infant development were themselves in their infancy. The research has finally grown up. Their verdict: It’s not good, and probably bad. Media, whether playing in the background or designed explicitly as an infant educational tool, has "potentially negative effects and no known positive effects for children younger than 2 years,” concluded the AAP’s report, released Oct. 18 at the Academy’s annual meeting in Boston and scheduled for November publication in the journal Pediatrics. Since the AAP made its original recommendations in 1999, passive entertainment screens—televisions, DVD players, computers streaming video—have become ubiquitous, and the average 12-month-old gets between one and two hours of screen time per day.

Images collected by Japan's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft have created a map--officially called Version 2 of the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model--that covers 99% of the planet's landmass, from 83 degrees north latitude to 83 degrees south, according to the space agency. The new map--which improves topographical coverage with the addition of 26,000 more stereo-pair images--is an update to one released by NASA and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) in June 2009. 4 Simple Tools for Creating an Infographic Resume
This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. As a freelancer or job seeker, it is important to have a resume that stands out among the rest — one of the more visually pleasing options on the market today is the infographic resume. An infographic resume enables a job seeker to better visualize his or her career history, education and skills. Unfortunately, not everyone is a graphic designer, and whipping up a professional-looking infographic resume can be a difficult task for the technically unskilled job seeker. For those of us not talented in design, it can also be costly to hire an experienced designer to toil over a career-centric infographic. Luckily, a number of companies are picking up on this growing trend and building apps to enable the average job seeker to create a beautiful resume. 1. The company's vision is to "be the future of resumes." 2. 3. 4.
