Take a tour of KathArt Interactive – award winning digital design agency Interactive Video: The Next Big Thing in Mobile by Paul Clothier For 20 years we have had an interactive web with links to all manner of content, including videos; this model is duplicated from the desktop to mobile devices. With the evolving possibilities of interactive video, we may soon see this turned on its head. The new canvas won’t be the web page, but may be a video, and all the interactivity and links to content will be within the video itself. What was the contained object will become the container itself. It may seem odd to say this, but sliced bread and interactive video have a lot in common. Otto Rohwedder was an expert jeweler, and owned three jewelry stores in St. Figure 1: Otto Rohwedder By 1927 he had saved up enough money to continue work on his slicer, and by 1928 he had created the first machine that not only sliced the bread but also wrapped it. Like sliced bread, interactive video has been around for many years now but I don’t see many people taking advantage of it for learning, particularly learning on mobile devices. Examples
Putting the Rapid into Interactive Video Video is back and it’s back in a big way. In fact, it’s gone interactive. When some of us got started in this business, the boring talking-head at screen left video was all the rage. But then the Internet came along and with it bandwidth concerns. And so video took a back seat for a long time. But it’s 2016 and we’re a YouTube world. Well if you know us, then you know we like a challenge. To give you a look under the hood, one of our developers played the role of cameraman and the main character. In total, the team logged between four and five days for the entire process: writing the script, shooting and editing the video, and building out the interactivity in Storyline 2. What do you think?
Interactive Video is About to Get Disruptive While video is arguably the most engaging and popular way of delivering online learning, in the workplace it’s largely underused and unevolved. All that is set to change. Fuelled by advances in digital video technology, and propelled by the advertising industry, interactive video is about to get disruptive! Inviting learners to engage with content is key. This includes video, a medium that’s growing exponentially and played on all devices. But learners also respond best when it’s more than a passive experience, when it’s interactive and immersive. Game-changing What’s so exciting, and has such potential from an online learning point of view, is all the different ways you can interact with content within the video itself. That’s not to say interactive video is a new concept, but the technology used to deliver it today is new. So how is this a richer, more immersive experience than in the past? Seamless and immersive because it all happens within the video The applications are unlimited
Could You Shock Your Learners With Interactive Video? As a new Lead Learning Designer at City & Guilds Kineo, I’ve been lucky enough to be able look through our back catalogue of courses recently. One of the things that I think we do really well here is experiential elearning. Because of this, I wanted to dig a little bit deeper into how organisatons can use interactive video to create the ultimate learning experience; throwing the learner into the driving seat of a situation and asking them: "Okay, what next? How are you going to deal with this?" Already I have seen some amazing photo-stories and branching scenarios that do an excellent job of adding tension and emotional engagement between learners and elearning. The Future of Elearning? Here at CG Kineo we’re very passionate about utilising technology to create content that’s even more engaging, and more ‘real’ to the learner. This got me pondering: ”Just what is it about the video that is so captivating (and how can we harness this for our courses?)” Created by
