The 8 world’s most prominent hyper-realist sculptors « Blog of Francesco Mugnai These Steampunk Star Wars Figures Are Bully! The sci-fi universe of George Lucas' draws a lot of inspiration from Japanese films by Kurosawa and pulp adventure serials of the 1930s, as well as some old Victorian era firefighter masks . We've also seem some artists take characters and create portraits of them in a steampunk setting . Sculptor Sillof took that one step further by crafting action figures of dozens of characters from the original trilogy as if they were flying airships and "X wing biplanes" instead of space ships. These figures were made using parts and pieces from existing toys and sculpting on top of them using an epoxy polymer to create the shapes that he couldn't find otherwise. "I usually work on all of them at once, so while the glue or paint is drying on one I work on another," Sillof writes on his website. The figures were created back in 2007, but I hadn't seen them yet so I figured that you might not have either. Sillof.com
3D Paintings on Panes of Glass Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan, transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. Only when these pieces are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect. Real Life Superhero Thwarts Robbery, Gains TV Fame People operating as superheroes in the real world have been making headlines over the past year, but this story takes the cake. Up in Seattle, a local costumed crime fighter thwarted a car theft and suddenly wound up on the news. Phoenix Jones, the black-and-gold wearing Seattle superhero, came across a would-be thief trying to break into the car of a local man who is only identified as "Dan." Jones proceeded to chase the criminal away, but didn't stick around for Dan to thank him. When Dan contacted the local news, reporters knew exactly who the vigilante was and brought the two men together; Jones showed off his non-lethal crime fighting equipment, his armor, and chatted with him. This isn't the first time that Phoenix Jones (or his "Rain City Superhero squad") have gained fame and/or notoriety. Sounds like Seattle PD needs to start up its own version of the Special Crimes Unit to help out with all the superheroes operating inside city borders. Source: io9
