Merry Christmas
Bill Maher, host of HBO‘s Real Time, and notorious religious nonbeliever, taped a harsh and hilarious “Christmas message” for his website that served as a damning critique of all Americans and of the one media figure most are too scared to attack: Oprah Winfrey. Calling Oprah’s “Favorite Things” episode “one of the most deeply disturbing things I’ve ever seen on television” was just the beginning of Maher’s memorably “cheerful” message. Maher used Oprah’s audience as the prime example for his thesis that the real religion in America is greed and is “what at the core is so rotten about this country.” Many find Maher’s “humor” offensive, especially towards people of faith, but if you step back and view Maher as a social commentator, merely trying to improve society then maybe you too could appreciate Maher’s willingness to be politically incorrect and go after anyone and everyone to make a point. Maher concluded:
Johnny and the Moondogs
Johnny and The Moondogs was a name adopted by John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison in 1958 for the purpose of entering Carroll Levis's "Search For A Star" talent competition. On this historic occasion, they would forsake their usual "Quarry Men" name. It is not clear why the name was changed prior to this competition, however, ther are two plausible explanations. The Quarry Men had lost two of its members in late summer 1958, Len Garry and Duff Lowe and this may have been a chance at a new start. Moreover, it was the second time they had entered this competition : the first was in 1957 at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool, when they failed to pass the preliminary auditions required to qualify for performing in front of an audience.
Floating Plastic Membranes Invite You To Walk On Air
Even if you fancy yourself an armchair (or bar stool) physicist, talking about string theory without delving deep into abstract language is a challenge. Tomás Saraceno broaches the topic in the most fun way possible this month, with a massive PVC jungle gym installation that he says represents the Planck scale, a theoretical subatomic realm where wormholes and multiverses abound. You’ll remember Saraceno from his 2009 Venice Biennale piece, Galaxies Forming Along Filaments, Like Droplets Along the Strands of a Spider’s Web; or Cloud City, the Met’s 2012 rooftop installation. Both pieces mixed utopian idealism with theoretical physics--a heady combination that some will surely roll their eyes at. But On Space Time Foam is hard not to like.

Fantastically Funny Illustrations by Gemma Correll (11 total) - My Modern...
Though Gemma Correll's illustrations may look like they're only meant for children, read the text and you'll soon realize that they're actually meant for adults. Her somewhat acerbic sense of humor is felt in every piece and the way she brings to life animals like dogs, cats and dinosaurs will make you giggle with glee. Gemma uses pens for drawing and then scans her images into Photoshop to adjust the color levels.
38 WAYS TO WIN AN ARGUMENT
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), was a brilliant German philosopher. These 38 Stratagems are excerpts from "The Art of Controversy", first translated into English and published in 1896. Carry your opponent's proposition beyond its natural limits; exaggerate it. The more general your opponent's statement becomes, the more objections you can find against it. The more restricted and narrow his or her propositions remain, the easier they are to defend by him or her. Use different meanings of your opponent's words to refute his or her argument.
Watch 6 Wondrous Clouds Float Inside Museum Walls
Anyone who has tried drawing or painting clouds knows that they’re incredibly difficult to reproduce in pictorial form. Well, that can’t actually be tougher than making them, right? In the last few years, artist Berndnaut Smilde has made a name for himself as a sculptor of clouds. His Nimbus series captures the fleeting “manmade” cloudage that he has created inside old gallery halls. They last for a moment, and then, just like that, they’re gone.
Nokia's new Pure type
To celebrate the launch of a brand new bespoke typeface created by Dalton Maag for Nokia, branding and communications agency DesignStudio has commissioned a raft of new posters by the likes of Build, Cartlidge Levene, Hello Von, North and Alex Trochut (who also designed the front cover of the new April issue of CR. His poster shown above). The new works, which will not simply utilise the new typeface but be based on the same guiding design principles - that of classic Finnish design – were showcased at an event last week in London where an auction of the 13, A1 prints, each limited to just 20 editions, raised over £3000 for the British Dyslexia Association. Here's a look at some of the work created for the project:
The Most Alien-Looking Place on Earth
"QUANTUM SHOT" #470Link - article by Avi Abrams Socotra Island: you have to see it to believe it We covered some otherwordly places before (see, for example, The Bolivian Salt Lake, or The Richat Structure), but this island simply blows away any notion about what is considered "normal" for a landscape on Earth. (images credit: Jan Vandorpe, socotra) Imagine waking up on the Socotra Island and taking a good look around you (let's say your buddies pulled a prank on you and delivered you there, and lets also assume that you don't have any hangover from abuse of any substances).
DXM Vault : DXM FAQ - Side Effects
[ Previous Section ][ Table of Contents ][ Next Section ] Like all drugs, DXM has side effects and risks. While mild in most people, they cannot be ignored. DXM is not a "safe drug" or a "harmless drug" (two oxymorons if there ever were). This section details side effects that you may encounter, and is the largest section in the FAQ (other than trip experiences). I have reported every adverse effect (side effect) that has been related to me as a part of a DXM experience, some that have never shown up but have occurred with other dissociatives, and a few that are just speculation.

Graphic-ExchanGE - a selection of graphic projects
This new deck by Joe White follow the Contraband one. You know Joe and his amazing detailed design as we work together on the (sold out) 2015 edition of the calendar and he designed the front cover. Every single playing card within the High Victorian deck was designed from scratch - even the Aces, Jokers, and court cards exude the grand excess of ornamentation quintessential to the Victorian era. In a word: breathtaking.
