Investigations

First of all, what investigative maths isn’t ! It’s not the same thing as practical work (though practical work may be involved) – and it’s not just a different sort of problem-solving. In investigative maths, children are given a starting-point and some clear procedures to try out but they usually have no idea at the outset what sort of results they’re going to get. This is where the interest comes. Rulin' The Roost: Making Number Combinations. Hi all!

Rulin' The Roost: Making Number Combinations

I seem to be having more math related posts lately than anything else. I think it's because I have more of a handle on Math this year than LA. We also switch our kids for LA and Math--and LA just started a few weeks ago versus Math before that. Here's a little activity that I did with my kids this past week when we were working with number combinations. Now, I know that many of you may be past this stage now because you start well before me! Math Activities For Preschoolers Help Children Enjoy Math. When is a good time to teach your child math?

Theme Park Spreadsheets - Lesson 1 - Simon Haughton's website. Having introduced basic spreadsheet skills to Year 5 using this series of lessons, when the children move up it into Year 6 some consideration needs to be given as to how these skills are going to then be built upon so as to not repeat stuff which they are already familiar and confident in doing.

Theme Park Spreadsheets - Lesson 1 - Simon Haughton's website

A few years ago I had the rather fabulous idea of asking them to design a theme park and to then create various spreadsheets to calculate the profit it makes after a year in business (based on the running costs of the rides in it and the money spent by people visiting it). This worked extremely well as it enabled them to apply their spreadsheet skills in quite a fun (and fairly meaningful) scenario whilst also helping them to appreciate the benefits associated with performing calculations with big numbers using ICT at the same time too - notably speed and accuracy.

Since then I've tweaked and refined the project into a nice five week block. Download 1. Download Theme Park Notes. Tangrams. ▶ Hexaflexagons - YouTube. Almost Unschoolers: Paper Frisbee Geometry. Sunday A (age 11) made a paper frisbee, as part of a verse go-along activity, in her Sunday school class.

Almost Unschoolers: Paper Frisbee Geometry

It's a very good frisbee, and still processing the whole higher math debate, I thought it could probably be used for a nice geometry lesson, too. To make one, you start out by trimming two sheets of paper into 8''x8'' squares. Divide, and cut each of the squares into four, 4''x4'' squares... ...for a total of eight squares. Fold each of the squares in half, turning them into rectangles. Fold the rectangles in half, short sides together... We've "Mathified" The Squares Game! – Games 4 Gains.

You'd make a grid of 100 (or so) dots on a napkin and each person would get to draw a line to connect 2 dots on his or her turn. When you drew a line that closed a square, you got to write your first initial in the square to show that you had "captured" it. The goal was to be the person who had captured the most squares once all the dots were connected. How to Draw a Mandala With a Compass - HowToGetCreative.com. First Class Maths: The Jewellery Case. First Class Maths: The Jewellery Case

This may well be my favourite. It’s The Jewellery Case task from First Class Maths, one of the logic puzzles from the resource. The intrigue created by the context, uncovering the criminal from a robbery in a jewellers, hooks children immediately into the task. However, the children will need to show great perseverance and creativity to decipher how the five clues can be used together to find the final solution.
