Etymology[edit] Classification[edit] The Family Chamaeleonidae was divided into two subfamilies, Brookesiinae and Chamaeleoninae, by Klaver and Böhme in 1986.[5] Since that time, the validity of this subfamily designation has been the subject of much debate,[6] although most phylogenetic studies support the notion that the pygmy chameleons of the subfamily Brookesiinae are not a monophyletic group.[7][8][9][10] While some authorities have previously preferred to use the subfamilial classification on the basis of the absence of evidence principal,[6] more recently these authorities have abandoned this subfamilial division and no longer recognize any subfamilies with the family Chamaeleonidae.[11] Change of color[edit] Some chameleon species are able to change their skin coloration.
