A new book to solve your conversation class problems. General English classes, especially intensive courses in summer, can mean having to think up a speaking topic for an hour every day.
The classic solution (once Taboos and Issues is exhausted and please tell me you’re not using the “conversation” methods on the Breaking News English site) is an article hastily photocopied from The Metro (if you’re teaching in a UK city) or an article not so hastily downloaded from the internet after you wasted an hour trawling sites for something your students could read in five minutes. But if you do that too often, without prepping any questions or vocab exercises or something to make it actually useful for the students beyond what is now essentially a reading lesson not a speaking lesson, it makes you look lazy and unprepared. When you’re not getting paid to prep you need something that saves you the most time but maximises class time. The method involves a text but, crucially, the discussion is done before the reading.
CAE. FCE. How to Complain in English. You can complain when you are not satisfied or happy with a service, product or event.
You should try to be polite as the person you are talking to will be more willing to help you solve the problem than if you talk to them in an angry, condescending manner. Some phrases you can use to help you complain in English: I’m sorry to say this but… There seems to be a problem with… There appears to be something wrong with… I was expecting ______ but… Sorry to bother you but… I want to complain about… I have to make a complaint about… I hate to tell you but… I’m angry about… I’m not satisfied with… I don’t understand why… Excuse me but there is a problem… Would you mind…? This is unfair. /I don’t think this is fair. This is ridiculous. / I think this is ridiculous. When you complain you should state your complaint and then how you think it should be resolved or a possible solution. Dave's ESL Cafe. DEB: DEBDict — obecný prohlížeč slovníků. E-learningové kurzy projektu IMPACT. Team-working skills. Video Worksheet Teacher's Notes The aim of this video is to help students understand team-working skills.
Exercises based on material from Pre-intermediate to Advanced levels of Open Mind (and the Mind series for American English learners) have been provided in the teacher's notes and worksheet to use alongside the video. In the first scenario, the team spend more time blaming each other for the error that has caused the customer to complain, than on solutions to resolve the problem. As the team get angry they miss the opportunity to solve the conflict and this only results in a potential tension in the office for the coming days. Following commentary from the life coach in the second scenario, the team focus on solutions by investigating where the error may have occurred, without spending time blaming one another, and then work together proactively to solve the problem.
Dictionaries. How to Motivate Reluctant Learners. What we call motivation in school is really a decision students make to invest in our classrooms.
It s our responsibility to show students the value of investment and guide them toward behaviors that will support learning. In this guide, Robyn R. Jackson takes you step by step through the process of motivating reluctant learners what great teachers do instead of relying on elaborate rewards systems or creative tricks to reach students who actively or passively resist investing themselves in the classroom. Nine ways to revise English vocabulary using slips of paper.
What can teachers do when classroom technology stops working?
Cristina Cabal, latest winner of the British Council's TeachingEnglish blog award for her post on pronunciation, suggests nine activities for revising English vocabulary using simple slips of paper. Nowadays, it seems very simple to plan a lesson that makes use of the many tools available online, especially as more and more of us have access to the Internet in our classrooms. But while technology is increasingly part of our teaching, there are times when it can cause problems and frustrations for teachers, such as when the Wi-Fi stops working or the computer shuts down, leaving you with a one-hour lesson to teach and no plan B up your sleeve. One of the best ways to deal with this situation is to use slips of paper – a resource available to every teacher in any given situation. The following activities have never let me down. A Comprehensive Framework For Student Motivation by Terry Heick When researching student motivation and gamification late last year, I came across the most comprehensive gamification framework I’ve ever seen.
Developed by gamification expert Yu-kai Chou, it was an ambitious effort that distinguished black hat gamification (which is “bad”–think Farmville and Candy Crush) from white hat gamification (which is “good”–think Minecraft or even an ACT score). (It’s also copyrighted, but they graciously allowed us to use it.) While it is designed not as an educational framework, but rather as a way to demonstrate gamification and its many strands, gamification is about human encouragement and motivation. So what began as a post about gamification became more a matter of student motivation–what motivates students in the classroom and why. Upper Intermediate. Free Printable ESL materials.
