2012 Internet Trends. Vijay Govindarajan: How Reverse Innovation Can Change the World - India Knowledge@Wharton. Vijay Govindarajan’s two-year stint at General Electric led him to look at innovation in a new way and to become a pioneer of the concept of reverse innovation. Govindarajan, now a professor of international business at Dartmouth College and the first professor in residence and chief innovation consultant at General Electric, defines reverse innovation as “any innovation that is adopted first in the developing world.”

His latest book, Reverse Innovation: Create Far From Home, Win Everywhere, which was co-authored with Chris Trimble, an adjunct professor at Dartmouth, is due for release on April 10. In an interview with India Knowledge@Wharton, Govindarajan shares his insights on what is driving reverse innovation and how it can change the world. “I believe it will power the future — not just in poor countries, but everywhere,” he says. An edited version of the interview follows. Vijay Govindarajan: Reverse innovation is any innovation that is adopted first in the developing world.

One starting place for determining how to use social media to add value to your innovation efforts is to look at what you hope to achieve.

This list can give you some inspiration for developing objectives for your use of social media: • Psion, a maker of rugged mobile computers, gets better access to and interaction with their stakeholders through their IngenuityWorking.com community. SAP gets similar benefits with their Co-Innovation Lab. • Key benefits of crowdsourcing initiatives like Dell IdeaStorm or MyStarbucksIdea are idea generation and feedback loops on ideas and projects. • Twitter is a great tool for doing business intelligence on an industry, competitors or to get a better understanding on how the innovation community or ecosystem talks about your company.

I have some difficulties time finding established cases specifically on innovation, but this will definitely become an important factor in the near future. inShare35. Rapport CES 2012. The time between the wars – the Great War and WW2 was one of great loss and uncertainty, but also one of invention, creativity and new ideas. The horrors of WWI shattered enlightenment belief that progress would continue and reason would prevail. New ideas and patterns of life developed in the 1920′s and in the way that people looked at the world [1].

The fast pace of technology change in the 20′s brought us the lie detector, traffic signal, bubble gum and Penicillin. An all-electronic moving-image television system somewhat similar to that used today was invented and demonstrated in 1929 [2]. The 30′s were not less invention-intensive bringing us the jet engine, helicopter, tea bags, sticky tape, ballpoint pen and the first photocopier [3]. However, somewhere between these great world-changing inventions there were some fun and sometimes even hilarious inventions the world has forgotten. Russ: “Siri, are you ready to help me buy something online?” Siri: “Not yet, Russ, but I may be able to at some point.” Not the answer I was hoping for, but at least Siri was honest about it! Siri, of course, is the new voice-enabled personal assistant that comes with all of the new Apple iPhone 4S smartphones. You can talk with Siri—to ask it questions and give it commands—while you focus on something else. This Apple television commercial provides a nice demonstration of Siri’s capabilities. Our particular interest in Siri here at Glenbrook is how this (or other) intelligent voice-aware agents might be enabled at some point to truly streamline how we buy stuff online.

We think of it as “conversational commerce”. It’s easy to imagine the possibilities for using Siri to: I certainly don’t need a personal assistant to tell me if I should wear a raincoat, but it would be great to have an assistant to go into town (virtually) and help do the shopping!
