Climate change and protected areas: first key learning from the LIFE Natur'Adapt project. Siggen Seminar 2020: Helping protected areas adapt to a changing climate. LEARN – Helping protected areas adapt to a changing climate Through case studies and presentations, speakers have given participants an overview and important considerations on how to adapt to climate change in (and around) protected areas. All presentations have been recorded and are accessible in an online playlist Program highlights Our house is on fire! A word from the president of EUROPARC on climate change and biodiversity loss. By Ignace Schops, President, EUROPARC Ignace highlighted the main trends leading to climate change and biodiversity loss that build up into a catastrophic era, the anthropocene. A seminar, a LIFE Project and the results of a European survey by Olivier de Sadeleer – Project Manager, EUROPARC Federation Download the presentation – Watch the video Elements of methodology and key concepts By Anne-Cerise Tissot, LIFE NaturAdapt Coordinator, Réserves Naturelles de France. Protected Areas in a Changing Climate #1: Nature conservation in a changing climate. Climate is changing. Shouldn’t nature conservation adapt and rise to the challenge? This new webinar series on climate change adaptation and protected area management aims to help protected area managers answer this question. Setting the scene: Nature conservation in a changing climate The goal of this session was to help participants understand and objectively frame the challenges that climate change adaptation represents for protected area managers.

It was the first of a series of webinars dedicated to climate change, that EUROPARC is organising in the framework of the LIFE NaturAdapt project. After an introductory presentation by Olivier de Sadeleer, the project manager of the LIFE NaturAdapt Project, two guest speakers – Jean-Baptiste Bosson from Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels Haute-Savoie and Olly Watts from RSPB – shared parts of their work and research, looking at climate change from different perspectives. Download Olivier’s presentation Download Jean-Baptiste’s presentation. Protected Areas in a Changing Climate #2: a SWOT analysis. Climate is changing. Shouldn’t nature conservation adapt and rise to the challenge? On the 28th of April, we held the second episode of a webinar series on climate change adaptation and protected area management that aims to help protected area managers answer this question. (check here the first episode) In this webinar, we looked at the results of Siggen Seminar 2020, this year specially dedicated to climate change) and shared a SWOT analysis for climate change adaptation in Protected Areas.

You can now download the presentations and watch the webinar recording. 1) Introduction and Outcomes of Siggen Seminar by Olivier de Sadeleer, EUROPARC Federation, Belgium 2) Why a SWOT analysis? By Anne-Cerise Tissot, Réserve Naturelles de France, France 3) Strengths and Weaknesses by Stewart Pritchard, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scotland, UK 4) Threats and Opportunities by Myrthe Fonck, Puur Water and Natuur, The Netherlands This webinar was organised within LIFE Natur’Adapt project.

Protected Areas in a Changing Climate #3: From theory to practice. During the webinar, we looked at outcomes from the Natur’Adapt project on climate change in Protected Areas. As a matter of introduction, Ainhize Butrón Mota, IHOBE, gave a thought-provoking presentation about the psychological barriers (dragons) that lead to inaction in the face of climate change.

Then, through case studies from Spain and England by José Atauri Mezquida, EUROPARC-Spain and Simon Duffield, Natural England respectively, participants went through important learnings on the process and practice of planning for climate change adaptation in protected areas. We can take away from those presentations that: It is all about fighting dragons. We learned that if climate is changing, and we are not acting it is because adaptation is a more of a societal problem.Adaptation must happen in the field, locally. It is important to bridge global trends with local specificities, to empower staff locally and make science accessible.Although uncertain, global changes are here to stay. Protected Areas in a Changing Climate #4: Priorities and measures to improve planning and management in Protected Areas. Exchange on the results of the LIFE Natur’Adapt project discussing case studies from Protected Areas & European and regional strategies.

Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity Conservation Priorities and measures to improve planning and management in Protected Areas How can we develop integrated approaches among different governing levels to improve climate change adaptation? What strategies and methodologies to improve planning and management? How can we integrate adaptation priorities with biodiversity conservation objectives and measures in Protected Areas? We will explore this considering the results of the LIFE Natur’Adapt project, case studies from Protected Areas and current policy priorities and developments at regional and European levels. We aim to exchange with decision-makers at all levels, organisations working on environment, biodiversity and climate change, Protected Areas networks and managing authorities.
