Sunwoo Hwang will compete in his first Asian Games race in the men's 100m freestyle preliminary round 6 race held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center swimming pool on the 24th.

Lee Ho-jun (22, Daegu Metropolitan City Hall), who leads the Korean men's freestyle sprint along with Hwang Sun-woo's rivals Pan Zhanle and Hwang Sun-woo, was also placed in Group 6.

Hojun Lee is in lane 3, Zhanle Fan is in lane 4, and Sunwoo Hwang is in lane 5.

A total of 44 athletes will participate in the men's 100m freestyle preliminary round.

They are divided into six groups and the top eight earn a ticket to the finals.

Although the results of the preliminaries are not directly related to medals, swimming fans have more to see as 100m freestyle champions  Hwang Sun-woo and Fan Zhanle are placed in the same group in the preliminaries.

The men's 100m freestyle preliminaries begin at 11:49 a.m. on the 24th, Korean time.

Katsuhiro Matsumoto (26, Japan), whom Hwang Sun-woo calls 'another competitor', will compete in Group 5, and China's notable rookie Wang Haoyu (18) will compete in Group 4.

The finals will also be held on the same day.

The top eight will compete to win the men's 100m freestyle, a popular swimming event, at 9:26 p.m. Korean time.

Looking at the history and records, the number one candidate to win this event is Pan Zhanle.

Fan Zhanle set a new Asian record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 47.22 seconds at the Hangzhou Asian Games held in May.

The previous Asian record for the 100m freestyle was 47.56 seconds set by Sunwoo Hwang at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

At the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships held in July in the 100m freestyle, Fan Zhanle placed 4th (47.43 seconds), and Sunwoo Hwang placed 9th (48.08 seconds) in the semifinals, unfortunately failing to advance to the final stage.

In the 200m freestyle, Hwang Sun-woo (personal best 1 minute 44.42 seconds), who took second place at the 2022 Budapest World Championships and third place at the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships, has an advantage over Fan Zhanle (1 minute 44.65 seconds).

Korean swimming expects Hwang Sun-woo to win three gold medals at the Asian Games.

If Hwang Seon-woo finds gold in the 100m freestyle, which is his first race in this competition, he can more comfortably continue his challenge of winning the men's 800m relay on the 25th and the 200m freestyle on the 27th.

Hwang Seon-woo said, "Hangzhou has good facilities such as swimming pools and lodgings, so there is no difficulty in controlling my condition.

The 'paint' is also good," and added, "I trained hard and focused for the Asian Games, including the funds.

I will run a race with no regrets."
