After a stellar showing at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, Korean swimmers are showing their mettle at the national championships.

National swimmer Heo Yeon-kyung (17, Bangsan High School 3) broke the Korean record in the women's 50-meter freestyle for the first time in five years.

According to the Korean Swimming Federation, Heo, who represented Seoul, won the 50-meter freestyle final in the women's high school category at the 104th National Games in Mokpo Indoor Pool, Jeollanam-do, on Friday with a time of 24.97 seconds.

Her time of 24.97 seconds was 0.11 seconds faster than the record of 25.08 seconds set by Jung So-eun (27, Wolsan City Hall) when she won the women's general category at the 2019 National Games.

He won silver in the women's 400-meter medley relay and bronze in the women's 800-meter freestyle relay and mixed 200-meter medley relay at the Asian Games.

It was his first gold medal at the Games. "I can't believe I'm the first Korean athlete to break 24 seconds," he said in an interview after the ceremony.

"I've been thinking that I'm still too young to compete in the 50 meters at the international level, so I should focus more on the 100 and 200 meters," Heo said. "I'll think about it and try harder to become a complete athlete in the short distances in the future."

Representing Gangwon, Hwang Sun-woo (20-Gangwon Provincial Government) won the men's 800-meter freestyle relay with Kim Woo-min, Yang Jae-hoon and Yeon Hee-yoon in 7:18.42 at the Mokpo Indoor Pool in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province.

It was Hwang's second gold medal in the event at the Asian Games. Hwang won gold in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay final with Kim Woo-min, Yang Jae-hoon, and Lee Ho-joon in an Asian record time of 7:01.73 on Aug. 25.

In the men's 50m freestyle final, Asian Games gold medalist Ji Yoo-chan (21-Daegu City Hall) won in 21.87 seconds, a new meet record.

Ji, who won gold in the men's 50m freestyle final at the Asian Games in 21.72, breaking both the Games record and the Korean record, also won the national title in front of his home fans. After finishing fourth in the 50m and 100m boys' freestyle in 2018 for Gwangju, Ji won his first gold medal at the national championships for Daegu.

In track and field, sprinter Kim Kook-young (32-Gwangju) won his 16th career gold medal.

Representing Gwangju, Kim finished first in the men's 100-meter final in 10.35 seconds at the Mokpo Sports Complex in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province.

It was Kim's second medal since the Asian Games. Along with Lee Jung-tae (Anyang City Hall), Lee Jae-sung (Korea Gymnastics University) and Ko Seung-hwan (Gwangju Metropolitan Government), Kim won a bronze medal in the men's 400-meter relay final with a Korean record of 38.74 seconds.

Representing Jeonbuk, hammer thrower Kim Tae-hee (18-Iri Gonggo) also won a medal at the Asian Games.

Kim won the gold medal in the women's high school hammer throw final at the Mokpo Sports Complex on Sunday with a new meet record of 60.22 meters. Kim had previously won bronze behind two Chinese athletes at the Asian Games on Sept. 29, when she set a Korean record of 64 meters (14 feet) in the final.

Weightlifting hopeful Kwon Dae-hee (17, Daegu Chego) won the title with a new Korean junior record.

Representing Daegu, Kwon won gold in the men's high school 81kg weightlifting event at the Wando Farmers, Fishermen and Sports Center with a total of 344kg, including 151kg in the snatch and 193kg in the jerk. His 193 kg in the 81 kg category is a new Korean junior record.
