Lava Consumes Vacationland and Kapoho Bay. Steaming fissures first began to crack open and spread lava across Hawaii’s Leilani Estates neighborhood on May 3, 2018. Since then, more than 20 fissures have opened on Kilauea’s Lower East Rift Zone, though most of the lava flows have been small and short-lived. Not so for fissure number 8.
That crack in the Earth has been regularly generating large fountains of lava that soar tens to hundreds of feet into the air. It has produced a large, channelized lava flow that has acted like a river, eating through the landscape as it flows toward the sea. While the fissure 8 lava flow initially remained in relatively narrow channels, it began to widen significantly as it neared the coastline and passed over flatter land. On June 3, 2018, lava from fissure 8 reached the ocean at Kapoho Bay on Hawaii’s southeast coast. Since May 3, 2018, Kilauea has erupted more than 110 million cubic meters of lava.
The new land at Kapoho Bay is quite dynamic, fragile, and dangerous. Fagradalsfjall Continues to Erupt. On March 19, 2021, the Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted after lying dormant for 800 years. Three months later, the volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula is still spewing lava and expanding its flow field. The natural-color images above show the lava flow progression from March, May, and June 2021. Note the ground around the volcano was still covered in snow in March. The darkest areas in May and June show where lava has cooled and piled up across the valley floors. Fresh lava flows that are still hot appear orange. All of the images were acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
The Icelandic Met Office reported that by May 3, the lava flow was largely confined to one main crater, a fifth fissure that opened in April. Icelandic officials are concerned that a prolonged eruption will cause lava to flow south and cross the Suðurstrandarvegur, a road used to transport goods and connects Reykjanes peninsula to South Iceland. Lava Flows From Fagradalsfjall. Landsat Views a Nighttime Eruption. Volcanic Eruption Lights Up Iceland. Swarms of small earthquakes in February 2021 on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula had experts warning that magma was moving beneath Geldingadalur valley and could soon erupt. Late on March 19, an eruption officially began as lava broke through the surface near Fagradalsfjall, one of several shield volcanoes on the peninsula. While small in comparison to other recent eruptions in Iceland, the event was bright and large enough for NASA and NOAA satellites to observe.
On March 21, 2021, the Suomi NPP satellite acquired a nighttime view of western Iceland through a thin layer of clouds. Reykjavik, Reykjanesbær, and other cities appear as bright spots in the image. The eruption appears as a new patch of light on the southwestern part of the island. For comparison, the image on the left shows the same area a few days before the eruption. Lava poured from a fissure that was initially 500 to 700 meters (1,600 to 2,300 feet) long. Socked in Stratovolcano. Rising above the clouds and the Sea of Okhotsk, the uninhabited Atlasov Island appears as a distinctive dark landform from the view of an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Formed by Alaid Volcano, Atlasov lies near the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Along the slopes of the central mountain, radial features—channels and gullies carved by liquid water and ice—are highlighted by snow as they extend towards the shoreline, which is obscured by low-lying clouds. Brown hues near the summit mark areas that are mostly barren due to steep slopes and high-altitude winter snowpack.
Downslope among the vegetated terrain, a few parasitic cones appear on the flanks of the volcano. This stratovolcano is not as isolated as this picture might imply. Kilauea’s Lava Lake Returns. After two years of quiet, Kilauea, Hawaii’s youngest and most active volcano, is erupting again. In the early days of the volcano’s latest eruption, water that had pooled in the volcano’s summit crater (Halema‘uma‘u) since July 2019 was replaced by a lava lake.
The water boiled off on December 20, 2020, after the new eruption opened three fissures on the walls of the crater and poured lava into the lake. The lava lake has grown considerably since December, reaching a volume of 35 million cubic yards (27 million cubic meters) and measuring 192 meters (630 feet) deep by January 6. Beginning on January 2, a small area of upwelling called a “dome fountain” broke through the crust coating the lava lake. The Suomi NPP satellite acquired a broad nighttime view of Hawaii on January 4, 2020. Volcanic activity on Kilauea is common. NASA Earth Observatory images by Joshua Stevens, using data from NASA/METI/AIST/Japan Space Systems, and the U.S. Detailed Views of Erupting Nabro Volcano. This page contains archived content and is no longer being updated. At the time of publication, it represented the best available science.
Since it began erupting on June 12, 2011, emissions from Eritrea’s Nabro Volcano have drifted over much of East Africa and the Middle East. Ash has displaced residents living near the volcano and disrupted flights in the region. Despite the volcano’s widespread effects, little is known about the eruption. Nabro is located in an isolated region along the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and few English-language reports have been published. Satellite remote sensing is currently the only reliable way to monitor the ongoing eruption. This pair of satellite images are among the first detailed pictures of the erupting vent and lava flows. The bright red portions of the false-color image (top) indicate hot surfaces.
The natural-color image (lower) shows a close-up view of the volcanic plume and eruption site. Image of the Day Atmosphere Land Volcanoes.
