Lee Hae-in aims for back-to-back World Championship medals

Korean figure skating women's singles national champion Lee Hae-in (Korea University) is aiming for a second consecutive medal at the World Championships.

One day ahead of the 2024 International Ice Skating Union (ISU) Figure Skating World Championships, Lee took part in a 35-minute official training session at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on Tuesday (Feb. 20). The practice began at 2:30 p.m. local time on Feb. 19.

Lee, who won a silver medal at the last Games, entered the rink with a bright smile on her face as she went through the technical checks for her short program. He became the first Korean to win a world title in 10 years last year. Kim Chae-yeon (Surigyo) and Yoo Young (Kyunghee University), who are competing in the women's singles together, also went through technical checks a day before the competition. They will compete in the women's singles short program on the 21st.

Men's singles national team members Cha Jun-hwan (Korea University), Kim Hyun-gyeom (Han AD) and Lee Si-hyung (Korea University) began their official training at 4 p.m. local time for about 35 minutes at the official practice venue, the Ver?? Auditorium, located about 5 kilometers from the competition site. The three will compete in the men's single short program on the 22nd.

Looking ahead to the competition, Lee said, "I think my jumps are better than I expected and my overall condition is good. I will be nervous for the short program tomorrow, but I want to do it with a mindset of having fun, and since I have come so far, I want to do it with a mindset of having fun rather than floating."

"I tried a lot to have a 'fun feeling when I jump' rather than just having three jumps, seven jumps, and so on. I practiced while thinking about how I can jump better and with better quality rather than 'don't make mistakes'," he said.

"To be honest, I would be very happy if I could win a medal for the second time in a row. I'll try my best. I don't have any pressure, and I hope to have more fun as it's my first time at the Worlds," he said.

Lee finished 11th at last month's Four Continents Games after a jumping error. He said there were some areas where the overall quality of his jumps was not good or hesitated before jumping, and he worked hard to improve those areas. Thanks to this, I'm glad that the lack of rotation and the speed before jumping backwards have improved."

Finally, when the topic of Shin Min-kyu and Shin Jia came up, Lee said, "When I saw them live, I was so proud of them for showing such a great performance at such a young age, and it made me feel so good. I thought it was great, and I think the younger players did a great job, so I think it gave me confidence and a little more energy."

Kim Chae-yeon also said, "I wasn't in bad shape before the tournament. I'm still a little jet-lagged, but other than that, I think I'm in good shape. I'm a little nervous, but I'm having fun (during the competition)," she said, raising expectations.

"I've been practicing a lot thinking about the number of laps and the quality of my jumps, and I've been focusing on the other non-jumping elements to make sure I don't lose my level," Kim said, adding, "I think the biggest difference is that I'm starting in the last group because I'm a little higher in the world rankings. I hope I can show a little bit better as I start in the last group," she said.

"I don't think my condition is too bad. I'll take care of it until tomorrow so I can (compete) in good shape," she said, adding, "I think I focused on the jumps. I made a little mistake in the lutz, which was a little disappointing, but everything else was fine. I think I did okay overall."

"It's my first World Championships in two years, so I'm a little bit excited and a little bit nervous. But I hope that I can show my hard work and prepare well," he said encouragingly.
