Now it’s time to start writing! There are many reasons why educators use blogs in their professional learning. Today we will help you with a few prompts to consider how you can begin sharing, and some excellent examples of Ontario leaders who already blog and share. Some educators begin by sharing the great work happening in their school or district. TLDSB Superintendent Andrea Gillespie shares her impressions of an event in her board here. I really believe in student blogging, because students own their learning, reflect and make connections about the knowledge they learn, and are motivated by their worldwide audience. I really admire the work of my friend Greta Sandler, @Gret, who has her fifth grade students from Argentina blog. I admire her because she was the first and is the only teacher at her school that has students blog.

This blog contains the basic skills needed for students learning to blog. They may have done some work with other teachers, but this is all about setting up their own blog, step by step. The best way to use this blog is to click on the “Getting Started” page in the header. The posts will be linked there in order of completion. Once you have completed all the activities in this page, you might want to improve your blog by adding other widgets, using images, adding videos etc. Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 1pm – 4.30pm I have the online classroom open, for students and teachers to come in and ask questions or get help with their blog. If using an ipad for the classroom you will need to download the Collaborate app first.

Tumblr members create an account and then can host one or several short-form blogs known as Tumblelogs, each one with a unique URL. David Capece of Fast Company aptly typecasts Tumblr as a hybrid form of social networking, photo sharing and microblogging—something like a lovechild of Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. Much like Twitter, Tumblr facilitates the broadcasting of short bursts of information rather than the crafting of elaborate websites or lengthy diatribes. One of the questions that often comes up in my workshops about blogging is, "what should I have the students write about? " There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of possible answers to this question. The suggestion that I often make is to start with a simple reflection activity.
