Teaching with Music and Songs. 20+ Activities and Resources for Teaching Language Through Song Lyrics. Music is the soul of language. ~ Max Heindel I am very interested in what motivates students to learn English. In conversations outside my classroom, I often ask language learners how and why they learned English. No matter what the age, I have found music to be a very powerful motivational tool for learning a language.

For example, a friend of mine from Korea told me she learned English by studying the lyrics to her favorite English songs. This sounds like a more interesting and engaging way to learn a language than from a textbook. Teaching with music is also a great idea because it: helps students learn language and even grammar in chunksis all around us. 10+ Activity Ideas and Resources It’s Music in Our Schools Month! It sounds it will work well with young learners yet sometimes the teenagers also would like to do something like this. • Choose some words from the song you will use in the class and prepare word cards.

Stick the words to the board. • Divide students into two teams (or groups if you have a big class) . • When the class is ready tell them each team will stand in a line in front of the board. • Play the song. • When a student at the front of the line hears a word in the song, s/he runs to the board and takes the card for the team. . • Game continues until all the words have been removed from the board. • The team with the most cards wins. • Give each team a copy of the lyrics with blanks. I thought it would be a good topic for a short “The Best…” list.

In order to make it on this list, a site has to be available free-of-charge (or at least some of its resources have to be free), easy-to-use, require no download, and allow students — either alone or in a group — to record themselves singing. A link to their performance can then be posted on a student or teacher website. There are only a few sites that meet that criteria. SMS Tunes is another similar site. Sing Snap is the newest addition to this list.

KaraSongs doesn’t allow students to record themselves, but they have tons of great videos showing the lyrics to popular songs with instrumental accompaniment. About Song Lyric Flowcharts are a series of graphic charts and diagrams that visualize the lyrics of popular songs in a sequential order, in similar vein to the use of LOLgraphs. Origin On August 17th, 2009, Tumblr user Jeannr posted a flowchart outlining the lyrics for the 1983 soft rock song “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler (shown below). In the first five years, the post gathered upwards of 2,700 notes. Precursor One of the earliest known online projects devoted to flowchart visualization of popular song lyrics was launched as a single webpage under the domain Jamphat.com in November 2007. The site featured a series of Microsoft Office charts breaking down the semantics of hip hop & rap song lyrics.

Spread On August 18th, 2009, BuzzFeed reposted Jeannr’s flowchart. On October 20th, YouTuber lyricalflowcharts uploaded a video showing the creation of another flowchart for The Beatles’ song “Hey Jude” (shown below). Notable Examples Search Interest Not available. In no time at all there were several additional posts Now I’ll be honest, that there is one that I don’t recognize as a song lyric … and you can probably guess which one it is. And as one person commented, the pie chart probably ought to be a roll chart, but still. So I went out to the all-knowing Google and discovered a few more … And just as quickly as it had arrived, my fascination with song lyrics went away.
