Fencer Koo Bon-gil answers questions from the media during the D-30 media day of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the National Athletes' Village in Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, on Aug. 24.
The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games organizing committee has raised the possibility of South Korean fencer Koo Bon-gil, 34, winning a fourth consecutive Asian Games sabre title.
"South Korean fencer Koo Bon-gil can make history," the Games' official information site posted on Wednesday.
Koo has collected five gold medals in his previous Asian Games appearances. From Guangzhou 2010 to Jakarta-Palembang 2018, Koo dominated the individual sabre competition and won team gold at Incheon 2014 and Jakarta-Palembang 2018.
Park Tae-hwan (swimming), Nam Hyun-hee (fencing) and Ryu Seo-yeon (bowling) hold the record for the most medals by a Korean at an Asian Games with six.
"If Koo wins both the individual and team events, he will have won seven Asian Games gold medals, the most by a South Korean athlete," the organizers said.
There are six gold medals up for grabs in men's fencing, which will be held at Hangzhou Dianji University from Sept. 24-29: individual foil, team foil, individual epee, team epee, individual sabre and team sabre.
