Giovanni Malago, chairman of the Italian Olympic Committee and leader of the organizing committee for the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, told members at the 141st General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) held in Mumbai, India on the 16th (local time), "The Italian government is planning to build a sliding center."
“We decided not to build a new stadium, so the three events will have to be held in another country,” he reported.
As the new construction budget doubled, the Italian government eventually gave up its hands.
Reuters reported that countries adjacent to the sliding center originally planned to be built in Cortina d'Ampezzo include Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and France.
Chairman Malago said, “This is a more complex issue than simply moving the stadium, so we will look at all possibilities to find the optimal location.”
The Milan/Cortina d'Ampezzo organizing committee is discussing this issue with the IOC and international sledding federations to make a final decision on an alternative site.
