Earth's Moon | Las Cumbres Observatory Earth is the first planet from the Sun to have a moon. Despite being Earth's closest neighbor, the Moon is very different from the Earth. It has no atmosphere and the surface is billions of years old. The dark areas in the image below are called maria. They are regions that were struck by large asteroids in the past, which caused molten rock from beneath the crust of the Moon to seep out. The Moon has hardly any magnetic field, although rocks studied on the Moon show evidence that in the past, the Moon probably had a small, but stronger magnetic field than it has now. The Moon's Exterior The Moon is much smaller than the Earth with a diameter of about 3476 km or 2160 miles. The surface of the Moon is covered with craters because the Moon doesn't have an atmosphere to protect it from incoming asteroids and debris, and it has no plate tectonics that would shift the surface and cause craters to disappear over time. 10 Word Cloud Generators You Have Probably Never Tried A few days back, we looked at five great ways to incorporate word cloud generators into your classroom. There are obviously many more uses out there for them – but that is a discussion for another post. We’ve mentioned most of these before – in a post from way back when – so I won’t go into too much detail about each individual one, but we’ve added a few notable ones to the list. (Of note, the list is in no particular order). The vast majority of them work the same: plug your text into the box, select a few options, and you’ve got yourself a word cloud. If you do a quick search for word cloud, you’ll see so many different types. Do you have a favorite word cloud generator from the list below? The Kitchen Pantry Scientist Using Games to Help Improve K–2 Students’ Phonics Skills Use a Variety of Fun Games With Small Groups At a time when phonics is being welcomed back into many classrooms as a proven strategy for developing young students’ literacy skills, game playing is a useful tool. Keep in mind, though, that games enhance teaching; they don't replace it. They provide the rote practice that most students need to solidify their recognition of phonics patterns and that some need to an even greater degree. As a result, most of these games work best in small groups, so that there is plenty of playtime and expert oversight. There could even be several different games going at once in a reading group, to keep the numbers even smaller and the focus even tighter. Although there are many commercial sources of games, and even free ones to download, often simple-to-make familiar games—card games, format games, and board games—work best. For game cards, cut 3½-by-5-inch index cards in half. Incorporate Familiar Card Games Uh-Oh! Offer Format Games
