After half a century of isolation from the Western world, Cubans are finding that change brings both hope and anxiety Witness Cuba's Evolution in 39 Photos Joakim Eskildsen for TIME An old American car, long a staple of Cuban roads, sits along Guanabo Beach, near Havana. “For centuries, Cuba’s greatest resource has been its people,” writes Pico Iyer in an extended essay on the Caribbean nation in the July 8, 2013 issue of TIME. To pair with Iyer’s tome, TIME called upon Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen. “I immediately fell in awe with the complexity of this country,” says Eskildsen. LensCulture Awards 2015 -SELFIE.

My life didn’t involve photography from the beginning. For my first two decades, I was focused on science, math, logic. In June 2013, my parents bought me my first camera. Little did I know that my life was about to have a drastic change. In December 2014, the Street Photo Thailand Collective announced their recruitment for a new member—that’s when I began to seriously look into Street Photography.

Of course, as you might guess, my submission didn’t make the cut. But after doing some research to prepare for my submission, my point of view changed—forever. I started to see beauty in daily life. My aim, now, is to inspire people with my street photography and to make the world a better place for anyone with a creative mind and an endless imagination. —Thanakorn Treratanaboot.

People and Animals of Peru. As the story goes, shamans of centuries long past make pilgrimages to the peaks of the Andes mountains to preform their hallowed rituals; bodies, preserved for untold years, have been found on the mountaintops, says San Francisco-based photographer Brian Flaherty, supporting the local lore and legend. In modern-day Peru, Flaherty discovered an unbreakable spirit similar to that found in the heroes of yesteryear; Notes from Peru is his love letter to land, and to the generations of people and animals who have shaped it. Although the photographer had long dreamt of visiting Peru, it wasn’t until recently that he and his wife finally made their voyage.

There was no roadmap; the hope, he explains, was simply to watch, listen, and record life in the balmy desert, the lush forest, and perhaps most of all, the highest altitudes. The faces the photographer encountered were unforgettable, marked by years of having weathered the elements at their most inhospitable. All images © Brian Flaherty. Indiphoto | WORK. A Chechen girl caught smoking is cause for arrest; while rumors of a couple having sex before marriage can result in an honor killing. The few girls who dare to rebel become targets in the eyes of Chechen authorities. After nearly two decades of vicious war and 70 years of Soviet rule, during which religious participation was banned, modern-day Chechnya is going through Islamic revival. The Chechen government is building mosques in every village, prayer rooms in public schools, and enforcing a stricter Islamic dress code for both men and women.

This photo essay chronicles the lives of young Muslim girls who witnessed the horrors of two wars and are now coming of age in a republic that is rapidly redefining itself as a Muslim state. Their journey began in war, poverty and oppression. They are fleeing, by the hundreds of thousands, from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, from Somalia, Iran, Pakistan and Eritrea, a ceaseless flow of humanity driven by fear, insecurity and lack of opportunity, their desperation matched only by their fortitude and sense of hope. Somehow they make it to Turkey, within sight of the Greek island of Lesbos, and embark in a flotilla of frail rubber rafts to the refuge of Europe. Entire families, old folks, young children and infants brave the perilous crossing outfitted with flimsy “life preservers” or inflated inner tubes.

Most of them make it across, but some have perished at sea. Once they set foot ashore, their past lives are no more than a memory, their futures uncertain. Now they must begin walking, with whatever possessions they can carry, but they’re not sure in which direction or even where they are going. They only seem to follow those who have gone before. Gold Coast, Australia I was raised on the taste of lawnmower fumes in the air and the dark gleam of perpetually circling crows. It was within the tyranny of this Lynchian landscape, dominated by intolerance and unexpected violence, where I became a reluctant witness to more crimes than I knew the names of by the time I was old enough to leave.

Words like rape, amphetamines, murder and extortion became a part of my vocabulary in a dialogue I was encouraged to keep only to myself. All of this set in a town that was built and marketed as a suburban utopia where the darkness was overlooked in favour of keeping the artificial paradise alive. "A sunny place for shady people" became a term that began circulating through the Australian media when referring to the ongoing melodramas of criminals that ended up settling on the Gold Coast.

Around 29 percent of girls are married before the age of 15, and 65% of girls are already married by the time they turn 18. Families are often in a hurry to marry their daughters off, because girls are thought of as an economic burden. Education is considered unnecessary for girls, because boys get the jobs and bring the money in.

Child marriage is both physically and psychologically damaging. Girls who are forcibly married at a young age are more likely to experience domestic abuse than their unmarried peers and many girls report their first sexual experience is forced. A girl of 15 is five times more likely to die in childbirth than a woman in her twenties. Allison Joyce, an American photojournalist based in Bangladesh, travelled to a rural area in Manikganj District, west of the capital, and photographed a wedding between a 15-year-old girl and a 32-year-old man.

Allison Joyce also met two other child brides. WPJ Institute » Workshop Photo Journalism. Linda Forsell, Dagens Næringsliv Children having Children. When Muhammed Muheisen won his first Pulitzer Prize, he wasn’t even 25 yet. He was born in Jerusalem in 1981 and, with a degree in journalism and political science, he joined the Associated Press at the age of 19. Since then, he has been an ever-rising star. During the time he was based in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, he produced a seemingly endless stream of captivating daily-life photographs. His main focus has been children. “All the children of the world share something in common, wherever they are from,” he told “Time” in 2013, after he was named by the magazine the Best Wire Photographer of the year. But Muheisen’s brilliance is not just about pointing a camera at a child. The first Pulitzer Prize came in 2005 for his coverage of the war in Iraq.

Recently, he was appointed Chief AP Photographer for the Middle East, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. His assignments, however, took him far beyond the Middle East. Pete Pin-cambodgian diaspora.
