Milanofiori Housing Complex / OBR. Architects: OBR Location: Milan, Italy Project Area: 27,400 sqm Photographs: Marco introini, Mariela Apollonio, Maurizio Bianchi The Milanofiori housing complex is part of the master plan by Erick van Egeraat, characterized by a series of functions (offices, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, leisure, residences) that create a cluster whose elements appear to follow the characteristics of the surrounding landscape creating a public park as the extension of the existing forest. The design seeks the symbiosis between architecture and landscape, so that the synthesis of artificial and natural elements could define the quality of living and the sense of belonging by the inhabitants. The interface between the building and the garden becomes the field where interaction between man and environment takes place.
This interface is defined by the “C” form of the complex which encompasses the public park, and by the porosity from interior to exterior that characterizes all 107 apartments.
Urban scale. Terraced. Monumental. Columnar Towers: Colville Estate Competition Entry / NL Architects + WHAT Architecture. The proposal by NL Architects and WHAT Architecture for the Columnar Towers: Colville Estate competition attempts to mitigate the effects of a large massing of residences by breaking each tower into a ‘bundle’ of seven smaller towers, or ‘columns’. Each mini-tower is formed by simple ‘stacks’ of single apartments. This residential development of 199 apartments in Hackney, London is part of a masterplan by Karakusevic Carson Architects for the regeneration of the Colville Estate. More images and architects’ description after the break.
Two towers were required with a different footprint and of different heights; one with six and the other with 5 apartments per floor. A ‘vertical dialogue’ is established between the columns: one grows, one shrinks. Each individual mini-tower is further defined through fenestration changes, creating a constantly changing formal rhythm to the two towers. In increasingly dense urban environments pleasant outdoor space gets ever more important.
Tour & Taxis. Showing image 6 of 33 The new Tour & Taxis masterplan aims to create a modern, vibrant quarter on the outskirts of Brussels Centre. The project site contains a number of aspects and views that correspond with the surrounding context and begin to suggest a gateway project for the proposed park. A project that gives prominence to the new intervention while protects the park from the nearby busy road. A project that acts as a buffer for the park, encapsulating it like a room, while allowing a multiplicity of connections. The Tour & Taxi towers need to become a symbol for the city of Brussels and for the overall development of TNT.
Mixed-use schemes, Goettsch Partners. Architecture firm Goettsch Partners (GP) has won two recent design competitions in China for the Greenland Group, one of the country’s largest real estate developers. Located in the cities of Foshan and Suzhou, the projects are both mixed-use, multi-building developments, together encompassing more than 650,000 sq m. In Foshan, the Chancheng Greenland Center involves a two-phased, 430,000 sq m development located east of the Old City District on a major arterial roadway linking Foshan with Guangzhou. The first-phase planning consists of a six-tower residential complex totaling 86,660 sq m; a 34,500 sq m street retail environment composed of two- and three-storey shops; and a 100m-tall commercial office tower. The second phase calls for two 200m-tall Class A office towers totalling 173,280 sq m; a 100m-tall, 37,570 sq m commercial office tower; and a four-storey, 70,000 sq m shopping mall.
In Suzhou, the mixed-use project totals 234,000 sq m across two city parcels. Green 360 Lofts by the Golf Course - BH Architects on Architizer. Parkhill Competition Winning Proposal / Nice Architects. Located on the former site on an old outdoor amphitheatre in Bratislava, Slovakia, the proposal for the housing and mixed use development, which won the first prize in the Parkhill competition, offers spectacular views and close proximity to one of the city’s oldest parks.
Designed by Nice Architects, their challenge on the 52,000 m2 site was to create intensive residential development with public services located in the lower part of the site. The final composition of the buildings becomes a small reminiscence of the former amphitheatre. More images and architects’ description after the break.
Imagine former site of old outdoor amphitheatre virtually unsuitable for residential development. Terrain too steep for comfortable traffic, sloping northward preventing proper insulation. This site happened to be a stage of most recent urban design/ architectural competition in Slovak republic. We distributed the proposed volume along the edges of the site. Tulou Housing Guangzhou / URBANUS Architects by Iwan Baan. Architecture photographer Iwan Baan once again shared with us an impressive photo set on a social housing project by Chinese architects Urbanus.
The commission was to design a 220 apartment housing complex for people for low income families in Guangzhou. Urbanus decided to give the complex a nice and intimate atmosphere, by reinterpreting the traditional Hakka Houses. This housing typology correspond to 300 year old houses in the south of China, and as you can see on some pictures after the jump, they are basically a large housing project where complete families live as a community (aunts, nieces, nephews, etc.)
You can take a look at the Urbanus’ complete photo set over here, and the Hakka Houses photos over here. Original Typology Original Typology.
