Inspiring Quotes. Thomas Sowell. Kerygmatic Peacebuilding as the Practice of Biblical Salam. In our current world, it is usually assumed that those holding a position of power have the responsibility to call conflicting parties to the negotiation table.
Peace brokers, such as the United States, European countries, Russia, or some other “strong nation,” will engage in diplomatic gymnastics to prepare conflicting parties for negotiations through the “Track I” approach—via professional diplomats or governmental authorities. Each of the parties in the conflict, in the meantime, makes every effort to gain a stronger hand, usually by taking greater hold of what they know their enemy wants (whether land, control, influence, demands, arms, or power), so that they would have a stronger position at the negotiation table. Should You Trust the Myers-Briggs Personality Test? How the early Christian church gave birth to today’s WEIRD Europeans.
In September 506 C.E., the fathers of what would later become the Roman Catholic Church gathered in southern France to draw up dozens of new laws.
Some forbade clergy from visiting unrelated women. Others forbade Christians from marrying anyone more closely related than their third cousin. Kobe Bryant’s “Letter to My Younger Self” Holds a Lesson for Us All. After his storied NBA career but before his tragic death at the age of 41, Kobe Bryant wrote a letter to himself.
His 17-year-old self, to be precise. By this time, Bryant had accumulated five NBA Championship rings and a net worth of $680 million. The Childhood Quality That’s the Best Predictor of Health, Wealth, and Happiness. If you were presented with the opportunity to instill one, and only one, quality in your children, what would it be?
Perhaps, like Solomon of old, you would be tempted to choose something like a long life, or great wealth, or even freedom from harm for your offspring. After all, what parents don’t desire happiness and success for their children? But while parents have a deep desire to see their children achieve these things, realistic parents understand the difficulty of such a task, and may even be tempted to shrug their shoulders and only hope for the best. The last two days in Cambridge were relentless, but in the best possible way. My wife Tammy and I flew in early in the morning from Amsterdam after three days of nonstop press and talks. Then we slept for three hours and found The Maison du Steak, which served an excellent ribeye. The waiter knew of my work and said that it had helped him. We snapped a picture together. 2017 Irving Kristol Award recipient Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks’ remarks. Materialism alone cannot explain the riddle of consciousness. Materialism holds the high ground these days in debates over that most ultimate of scientific questions: the nature of consciousness.
When tackling the problem of mind and brain, many prominent researchers advocate for a universe fully reducible to matter. ‘Of course you are nothing but the activity of your neurons,’ they proclaim. That position seems reasonable and sober in light of neuroscience’s advances, with brilliant images of brains lighting up like Christmas trees while test subjects eat apples, watch movies or dream. And aren’t all the underlying physical laws already known? The Myth of the Pagan Origins of Easter (Jesus of Nazareth’s Resurrection) You may not get any chocolate bunnies this Easter, but you’re bound to stumble across an article or meme suggesting that the story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead is just a reincarnation of some pagan myth.
Whether it’s Ishtar, Osiris, or Attis, these claims are tantalizing but devoid of scholarly content--much like the sugar rush of the chocolate bunny, with its deficit of actual nourishment. Claims like these are at least as old as James Frazer’s The Golden Bough, published in 1890. However, they circulate routinely in new packaging. Unfortunately, the public tends to remain ignorant of the results of alternative scholarship. Sensationalism (like sex) sells. I do not propose to decisively solve any questions about faith or belief. Nor will I try to explain or justify many of the cultural traditions and practices surrounding Easter. The differences are also apparent when we compare the various “dying god” stories and the Christian story. Visualization of Cross-References in the Bible.
