Au début, cette fête se célébrait le 21, mais avec l'arrivée du christianisme, on l'a facilement assimilée à la fête de Saint-Jean Baptiste, le 24. Avant la révolution française, la St-Jean Baptiste était une fête très populaire en France. Au début, Saint-Joseph avait été désigné protecteur du nouveau pays (un peu comme le Saint-Patrick des Irlandais).
