The Science of Soil Health: Finale, Part 1. Allan Savory Earth - A New Wild PBS. Parched: A New Dust Bowl Forms in the Heartland. In Boise City, Oklahoma, over the catfish special at the Rockin' A Café, the old-timers in this tiny prairie town grouse about billowing dust clouds so thick they forced traffic off the highways and laid down a suffocating layer of topsoil over fields once green with young wheat.

Parched: A New Dust Bowl Forms in the Heartland

They talk not of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, but of the duster that rolled through here on April 27, clocked at 62.3 miles per hour. It was the tenth time this year that Boise City, at the western end of the Oklahoma panhandle, has endured a dust storm with gusts more than 50 miles per hour, part of a breezier weather trend in a region already known for high winds. "When people ask me if we'll have a Dust Bowl again, I tell them we're having one now," says Millard Fowler, age 101, who lunches most days at the Rockin' A with his 72-year-old son, Gary.

Soil Health, A Montana Perspective Video Series

Many of us have heard of these ideas working in other parts of the country, but is it really possible in Montana? Principles of soil health can be adapted for use in all environments, including those found in Montana. Montana farmers and ranchers who have been using these principles to build soil health can provide a wealth of practical information to those interested in the topic. The Soil Health, A Montana Perspective series is divided into segments that can be viewed individually.

Forest Service Drainage Index and Productivity Index Website The uppermost part of a forest soil profile (Haplorthod) in a northern Michigan hardwood forest. This website is designed to help you calculate the Drainage Index (DI) and Productivity Index (PI) of all soils that are classified within the US system of Soil Taxonomy. These data aid in the identification of areas at risk to various forest insects and diseases because of their ability to identify regions of potential tree stress (see the 2013-2027 National Insect and Disease Forest Risk Assessment).

Common as Dirt

This may not sound as catchy as previous international years, variously devoted to such topics as Water Cooperation, Sustainable Energy, Forests, Biodiversity, and Rapprochement of Cultures–but the truth is that the United Nations could hardly have made a better pick. Given that we can’t survive without it, it’s amazing how few of us truly appreciate dirt. Look at the way we talk about it: Dirty thoughts are reprehensible. Dirty linen is embarrassing. Dirty tricks are mean. Furthermore, for all that, there seems to be dirt all over the place, there actually isn’t all that much of it. Cut the apple in quarters and set three aside. Dirt is not only rare, but it’s complicated. The Dirt on Dirt: 5 Things You Should Know About Soil. We walk on it every day.

In 1981 Haiti imported 18,000 tons of rice. Now the country imports close to 400,000 tons annually.

Less than a quarter is homegrown. “Tè a fatige,” said 70 percent of Haitian farmers in a recent survey when asked about the major agricultural problems they faced. And no wonder. Our Good Earth. By Charles C. Mann. The Naked Scientists Podcast on acast. 2015 International Year of Soils. Soil Quality - Introduction to Soils — Start Farming. Soil health is the foundation of productive farming practices. Fertile soil provides essential nutrients to plants. Important physical characteristics of soil-like structures and aggregation allow water and air to infiltrate, roots to explore, and biota to thrive. Diverse and active biological communities help soil resist physical degradation and cycle nutrients at rates to meet plant needs. Soil health and soil quality are terms used interchangeably to describe soils that are not only fertile but also possess adequate physical and biological properties to “sustain productivity, maintain environmental quality and promote plant and animal health” (Doron 1994).
