California: fierce winds may spread more fires as millions lose power. Millions of Californians prepared to be in the dark for days as the United States’ largest utility once again said it was switching off power to prevent powerful winds from damaging its equipment and sparking more fires.
Meanwhile, firefighters were battling wildfires across the state on Tuesday, as powerful winds were expected to pick up again. The Kincade fire in Sonoma county in California’s north had destroyed 123 homes and other structures by Tuesday morning and was 15% contained. Crews were also working to control a fierce fire near the Getty Museum in Los Angeles that had prompted evacuations on Monday.
“I know this moment generates a tremendous amount of anxiety,” California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, said on Monday about the two major blazes. Strong winds were expected to complicate firefighting efforts on Tuesday. Climate change has finally caught up Newtok, Alaska. Images reveal Iceland's glacier melt. 315 billion-tonne iceberg breaks off Antarctica. Image copyright COPERNICUS DATA/SENTINEL-1/@StefLhermitte The Amery Ice Shelf in Antarctica has just produced its biggest iceberg in more than 50 years.
The calved block covers 1,636 sq km in area - a little smaller than Scotland's Isle of Skye - and is called D28. The scale of the berg means it will have to be monitored and tracked because it could in future pose a hazard to shipping. Not since the early 1960s has Amery calved a bigger iceberg. That was a whopping 9,000 sq km in area. Evidence of climate change. Summer heat killed nearly 1,500 in France, officials say. Image copyright AFP Record heatwaves in June and July caused the deaths of 1,435 people in France this year, according to the country's health minister.
Speaking on French radio, Agnès Buzyn said half of those who died were aged over 75. But Ms Buzyn said, thanks to preventative measures, the rate was 10 times lower than the same period in 2003 when a deadly heatwave hit Europe. France recorded its highest-ever temperature of 46C (114.8F) in June. The capital, Paris, also saw a record high temperature of 42.6C (108.7F) in July. According to the Ministry of Health, 567 people died during France's first heatwave this year, from 24 June to 7 July. World 'gravely' unprepared for effects of climate crisis – report. This lack of preparedness will result in poverty, water shortages and levels of migration soaring, with an “irrefutable toll on human life”, the report warns. Trillion-dollar investment is needed to avert “climate apartheid”, where the rich escape the effects and the poor do not, but this investment is far smaller than the eventual cost of doing nothing. The study says the greatest obstacle is not money but a lack of “political leadership that shakes people out of their collective slumber”.
