As a royal clerk he was well-placed to gather information from members of the royal court, and he also included many documents, especially letters, into his history. Marc Morris: Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, was NOT a dwarf. This is, quite simply, a modern myth.

Marc Morris: Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, was NOT a dwarf

There is no evidence, contemporary or otherwise, to support it. It derives entirely from an excavation of Matilda’s tomb in Caen carried out in 1959, during which the scanty remains of her skeleton were measured. Wherwell-history-i. Before the Reformation the Parish of Wherwell was in the hands of an important Abbey of Benedictine Nuns, whose Abbess was Lady of the Manor of an area much larger than the existing Parish.

Wherwell is remarkable for an extraordinary dramatic history, and in early days, when the influence of the Abbey was most powerful, it must have been a place of considerable importance. Kings hunted in the surrounding forests, and Queens, when exiled, took refuge there. The first mention of Wherwell is to be found in the will of King Edred.

Roger Bigod II Earl of Norfolk. I've been preparing a permanent piece for my website about Roger Bigod II, the hero of THE TIME OF SINGING.

Roger Bigod II Earl of Norfolk

It'll be up at the website soon, but in the meantime here it is for my blog. Roger Bigod III set out to write about him after being made curious by a remark in a reference work mentioning that his career path was in many ways similar to that of the great William Marshal. They were both self-made men, if for different reasons. Both had clawed their way up the ladder of fame and fortune. Both had been born in troubled times and had cut their political teeth at the courts of the Angevin kings and their familiers.

The Anarchy. The Anarchy was a war in England and Normandy between 1135 and 1153, characterised by a breakdown in law and order.

The Anarchy

The conflict originated with a succession crisis towards the end of the reign of Henry I, when the king's only legitimate son, William Adelin, died aboard the White Ship in 1120. Henry's attempts to install his daughter, the Empress Matilda, as his successor were unsuccessful and on Henry's death in 1135, his nephew Stephen of Blois took power with the help of his brother, Henry of Winchester. Stephen's early reign was marked by fierce fighting with English barons, rebellious Welsh leaders and Scottish invaders. Following a major rebellion in the south-west of England, Matilda invaded in 1139 with the help of her half-brother, Robert of Gloucester. It's the publication this week of A Place Beyond Courage: The story of William Marshal's father John FitzGilbert, so to mark the event I'm putting this interview with the protagonist on my blog.I first became interested in John's story while writing The Greatest Knight, about his son, the legendary William Marshal.

An Interview With John Marshal

John himself is something of a legend too, having gone down in history as the callous father who said (to paraphrase) when his son was threatened with death 'Go ahead and hang him, I have the anvils and hammers to get better than him.' That speech set me to wondering about the man behind the words and led me to begin digging for details, as I felt there was far more to this than met the eye. I was right. What I have discovered is a man, who, rather like Richard III has been the victim of the spin of history.
