Let’s begin with the premise that we all have good intentions where our family is concerned.
We want what is best for them, and we want to honor their wishes. Unfortunately, when it comes to end-of-life issues, many of us have not made it clear to our own families the desires we have related to our own care and decisions. The best way to ensure this is for each one of us to fill out the Five Wishes document, which outlines all the important issues to be considered and decided upon prior to our death. The wishes consist of 1) the person I want to make care decisions for me when I can’t, 2) the kind of medical treatment I want or don’t want, 3) How comfortable I want to be (the choice often comes down to pain medications versus lucidity), 4) how I want people to treat me (how those final moments should play out) and 5) what I want my loved ones to know.
