Solar AC Unit Employing Solar Absorption Chiller Technology. Georgia Tech - ARPA-E Energy Project: Absorption Cooling. Georgia Tech - ARPA-E Energy Project: Absorption Cooling. Iterative Adaptation: Reading list for beginners - Development, growth, public policy. Someone asked me longtime back to suggest reading list for beginners in public policy/development.
I had quickly put together a reading list. In a recent interview of Arvind Subramanian with Karthik Muralidharan, towards the end, Arvind says that younger generation should read a lot. This prompted me to update my old reading list for beginners and post it publicly. Arvind Subramanian already has put out a comprehensive reading list on development and growth. My list won't even come closer. My purpose of writing this post is to re-iterate the importance of reading and provide a context and broad framework for beginners, who are interested in the field of development.
One of the common excuses of people is that they don't find time to read. Arvind Subramanian, the current Chief Economic Adviser to Govt. of India with his tight schedules, read 150 books last year, as mentioned in one of the newspapers that profiled him. So, clearly, lack of time can't be any excuse. 1) Philosophy Prof. HyRef Technology Revolutionizes Renewable Energy Forecasting. Clean Power Published on August 12th, 2013 | by Silvio Marcacci August 12th, 2013 by Silvio Marcacci IBM has long been known for building some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, but what happens when it applies advanced modeling to solving the intermittency of renewable energy?
The answer, it turns out, is “Hybrid Renewable Energy Forecasting” (HyRef). This new technology, already online in China, is able to produce accurate local weather and renewable energy forecasts as far as one month in advance, down to 15-minute increments. The HyRef technology combines advanced power and weather computer modeling, sophisticated cloud imaging, sky-facing cameras, and on-site sensors to accurately predict solar power and wind energy output and increase the amount of renewable electricity flowing onto grids across the world. Crowded Field In Renewable Energy Forecasting Race More Sophisticated Analysis Than Ever Before 10% Increase In Renewables Output. The Higher Learning. Humans have spent around 10,000 years mastering the art of farming.
But one thing we have yet to figure out is how to prevent the destruction of crops as a result of natural weather-related disasters, like severe droughts and violent storms. Shigeharu Shimamura, a plant physiologist and indoor farmer based in eastern Japan, thinks he may have solved that problem. Shimamura got the idea to pursue indoor farming when, as a teenager, he came across a “vegetable factory” at Expo ’85 (an international science and technology world’s fair that was held in the Japanese city of Tsukuba in 1985). Shimamura went on to get a degree from the Tokyo University of Agriculture.
Then, in 2004, he started his own indoor farming company called Mirai (a Japanese word meaning “future”). In 2011, a powerful earthquake and resulting tsunamis damaged huge swaths of Japan, destroying hundreds of acres of crops and creating food shortages across the country. Shimamura was more than willing to try out the new lights. CLOSING THE CARBON CYCLE: sunfire GmbH.
