I Danmark markeres flere nationale eller politiske mærkedage med offentlige taler. Hvad er retorik? Retorik har traditionelt været forbundet med at holde tale i et offentligt forum, men opfattes i dag bredere, som en samtale mellem medlemmer af et samfund. Retorik skaber således forståelse for hvem vi er og hvordan vi opfatter vores fællesskab.
Den almindeligste definition af retorik har siden antikken været at retorik er kunsten at anvende sproget til at kommunikere effektivt og overbevisende. Retorik har derfor både en praktisk og en teoretisk side.
