Especially when it comes to copyright, plagiarism and intellectual property. The waters are murky. Not being familiar with online digital rights and responsibilities (hey, teachers did not grow up with the Internet being around), educators are wading through uncharted waters (hey, I did not know that I could not just google an image to use. If someone puts it up online it is free for the taking). That does not mean they can close their eyes and pretend life is the same or that the same rules apply to online versus offline use of copyrighted material with their students. It is every educator’s responsibility to become familiar , observe and model for their students! I have written about copyright on this blog many time. The waters are murky, it is not an easy topic.

Introduction – Am I really stealing materials off the internet? The wealth and variety of information available on the internet provides amazing resources for teachers to use in their classrooms. When surfing on the internet, it's easy to feel that all of the materials are intended for public use. In addition, the material from the internet doesn't get outdated as quickly as a textbook and the cost of the materials is unbeatable! Videos and Guides to Copyright & Creative Commons. Creative Commons Resources for Classroom Teachers. Posted by Bill Ferriter on Sunday, 09/08/2013 If your students are using images, video, or music in the final products that they are producing for your class, then it is INCREDIBLY important that you introduce them to the Creative Commons -- an organization that is helping to redefine copyright laws.

With a self-described goal to "save the world from failed sharing," the Creative Commons organization has developed a set of licenses that content creators can use when sharing the work. The British Library Puts 1,000,000 Images into the Public Domain, Making Them Free to Reuse & Remix

Not to be outdone, the British Library came out with its own announcement on Thursday: We have released over a million images onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books digitised by Microsoft who then generously gifted the scanned images to us, allowing us to release them back into the Public Domain. The images themselves cover a startling mix of subjects: There are maps, geological diagrams, beautiful illustrations, comical satire, illuminated and decorative letters, colourful illustrations, landscapes, wall-paintings and so much more that even we are not aware of.

The librarians behind the project freely admit that they don't exactly have a great handle on the images in the collection. Royalty Free Stock Footage Downloads. Creative Commons: 15+ Resources.
