My name is Carla Sonheim and I am the author of Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun! (Quarry Books, 2010). This book has sold over 100,000 copies, and for this I am very grateful! When my boys were young I taught art in their elementary school classrooms. There I was tasked (happily!)
This “serious and silly” approach sums up what we do with our online classes, too. Our current artist-teachers are Lynn Whipple, Cat Bennett, Diane Culhane, Fred Lisaius, Karine Swenson, Alison O’Donoghue, Stephanie Hargrave, Krista Peel Starer, Dar Hosta James, and me! My husband, Steve, is a full partner in this venture. Steve and I live in Seattle, Washington, just 10 minutes away from our three beautiful grandchildren. Carla Mission for Our Online Classes TECHNIQUE & CREATIVITY We strive to make sure that every class includes both innovative techniques and the opportunity for personal growth and self expression.

What a wonderfully addictive process that, for me, is also healing and grounding. There is something that happens, while pulling Gelli Plate mono-prints, that centers me. Creating Monoprints is a Creative Meditative Practice. Gelli Arts Mode: Beyond Time and Space When I am Rocking, in my Gelli Arts Mode, I lose track of time and surroundings outside my art space. Breathe Deeper I find myself breathing deeper when I’m using the Gelli Plate.
Letting Go There is something addictive about this process, perhaps because it is generally so satisfying to move into a space of trust and openness. Embracing the Beautiful Mystery. Annie Hamman. Tracy Verdugo. Susan Black. Donna Heart. I wrote a post a while back now titled Shift Happens.
You can read all about that here if you like… This time it was one of those moments, that usually come after a long desert experience, and are quite profound and fill your belly with excitement and fire all over again like it was the first time you ever became truly excited about something. Life ebs and flows. It can’t always be full-on, or any one thing, but I sure love a good sense of shift! A couple of days ago I was talking to a friend about how my business just hasn’t had the time invested in it that it needs to thrive. I’ve been volunteering my time in a few other places and at the end of the day, my biz hasn’t had the time and love that it needs. And then it came – swift yet gentle, right between the eyes, yet with tenderness and love.

Welcome to the third interview in a series we are running on the blog called: Tea & Cake with Gracie :) My awesome friend and colleague Gracie Howle is interviewing inspiring artists and posting the interviews (including some free offers not published elsewhere before) here on the blog every 2 months or so. I love to create art and bring amazing artists & people together in my classes, in person and on social media. As part of this drive, I really wanted to help bring more exposure to some of the amazing artists out there too!
